Pentax DA 18-50mm HD WR

Whilst I am awaiting delivery of a second-hand DA18-135mm WR lens, which I have owned before and regretted selling, I thought I would give the lens that came with my KP body, the sometimes unappreciated DA 18-50mm HD WR, a bit of an outing. I think you will agree though, that this lens is a lot better than some people give credit for, enjoy!

Hi Wiltshireborn,

It is so, the lens of the kit is almost always relegated to be put aside, I have never used it preferring different lenses, this is proof of what you say.
Anyway from your really good shots, you understand that you have to use a lens before saying it is not good, congratulations for the advice.

Ciao Mario

The HD version of that lens is well regarded, at least by me

HD vs. SMC Pentax-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

The difference between the SMC and HD versions surprised me at the time of testing.

If I had to say anything negative about this lens it would be about the locking button, which I find very annoying and feel that for such a small lens, it is totally unnecessary.

FYI - if anyone is interested in this lens I just posted that it is on sale at b&h and Adorama (in the price watch section).

My dal is designated for rainy day landscape. The rain interferes with detail anyway. It would get more use but it overlaps many other lenses. The lock gets less sticky with use but I suspect that its being sticky prevents it getting used enough to not be sticky.

The lens description does not indicate whether this is the DA-L kit lens or the HD version. I got the DA-L kit version with a bargain deal for the outgoing K-S2, included for next to nothing over the bargain price for the body only, after the K-70 was announced. My copy performs well, in fact better than the older 18-55mm II kit lens I had, and its super-compact design makes it relegated for use when I need that aspect.

I am still waiting for my 18-135mm, should get it by Wednesday, anyhow, took some more photos with my DA 18-50mm HD WR and this shot in particular blew me away. It was hand held but the sharpness and detail I think is pretty amazing for this kit lens

Another exceptional shot for such a "lowly" lens. So you do have the HD version. BTW, the HD version is not normally a kit lens. The DA-L was offered at something like $40 over the bargain price of the K-S2 body at the time, so of course I took it. Same optics as the HD version, but without the HD coatings.
