A New Standard prime lens.

What's up with the new Pentax DA 55mm Standard Prime Lens... Since it is a Digital-only lens, and is a standard lens, you'd expect a fast lens in the 30 to 40mm range. The 55mm lens would only be considered "standard" if it were part of a full-frame system, and I don't think Pentax will be making $700+ lenses for its aging fleet of 35mm film cameras.
So, is this a new lens for the long-cherished full-frame DSLR system, or is it a mislabeled portrait lens for the K20 system?

I think it's meant as an APS-C replacement for the FA* 85mm, 55*1.5 = 82.5,
not as a standard lens for the APS-C format.

Anyone familiar with the Pentax line will recognize immediately that the DA* designation shows that this lens is for the Pentax DSLR's only. This lens will be equivalent to a fast 85mm in the 35mm world. I don't think Pentax has mislabeled the lens at all.

Agreed. This is about perfect to replace the FA*85. I'm hoping the new 55 is equal to that lens.

Thanks, that's what I figured, but it's difficult to understand why they would call it a standard lens. Like many others, I am constantly scanning the horizon for hints of a full-frame DSLR release. It will determine whether my next lens will be the DA 35mm macro, the FA 35mm f/2 or one of the Sigma EX DG lenses in that range...
Thanks, Andre

PENTAX

Pentax calls it a medium telephoto on their website at the link above.

It also features a [...] rounded diaphragm blades to create a more circular aperture for smooth, beautiful bokeh at large apertures.

Anyone want to place bets on how long it take The Pirate to order this lens...?

Theyre bringing out a new 30mm too.

Where have you found them doing any such thing? Every press release & other documentation from Pentax I've seen refers to it as telephoto, which of course is what it is.
