I love how many people have already said the 40 XS... this lens was on my watch list. I think it will have to be bumped up in priority.
The ergonomics of the 40XS bothered me so much I sold it and got the 40 Ltd.

I only ever remember 2 occasions showing off lenses as described in the initial post - and it's been the HD-DA 15mm Ltd. for it's beautiful compact build, smooth focus and surprising pull-out hood, which people were curious about.

Honestly, for me, 40mm is too close to my 35mm or my 50mm to warrant buying a 40mm.
But if I did get one...
I would be buying one for the discrete shots and compact carry, and the XS has the LTD beat in both price and size.
...love the limiteds though

If someone is curious about them, my SMC 15/3.5 with the aspherical element comes out to play.

I have 37 manual focus lenses, but am loathe to choose a favorite in case the other 36 lenses stage a mutiny. That said, just between us, I'd choose the K15/3.5 like many others.

Please pass the beer nuts.

Presumably for almost all the time the gear would be handled by the servants anyway.

I used to have a servant, but I did her in, mistook her for Lady L. LORD LUCAN'S FULL STORY - THE MYSTERY SURROUNDING LORD LUCAN. Can't afford any more, and anyway they might blow my cover now

Good point. A chap in your position couldn't possibly engage in any sort of showing off!

I only "show off" my gear at home. When I'm out shooting, like you, it's all business.

Anyway, my aspheric Takumar 15/3.5 doesn't leave the house. It is most definitely a collector's item - after all, the M42 thread doesn't quite line up the hood properly, so it vignettes on the K-1. That's where my (non-aspheric) K15/3.5 wins

No one I know cares or really has a clue about camera lenses, however the lens that draws the most attention when I use it is the K1000/8. It's physically ever longer than the A1200/8 and has a huge metal trunk. Along with the massive tripod and cart to transport everything, one can't stealthy shoot very easily. People get nervous when you point the lens in their direction.

I never see any friends, but when i did, i'd always enjoy telling the story of the Helios series of lenses and showing off the 44-2

I show them the Auto 110 50mm first (about the size of a film can), then show them images made from it:

When I had it, the 40 Limited for sure. Such high quality in such a small package.

Now that I own the silver 43 instead, that one gets shown around a lot.

The 60-250 is always a talking point, because mine is modified and that's a great discussion topic.

The 77 thanks to its elegance is also a good discussion starter.

Almost all pentax 67 and Pentax 645 lenses are admirable pieces of technology. In the K mount, I'd say the DA* 60-250 mm f/4 is the most beautiful object per se.

Great use of the 10–17mm.
