Oh, this is not good, and the DFA 150-450mm is a fairly recent design!!

You are an evil temptress. Now I'm debating if I should even look at it or not.
All in good faith.
My contemplation over the lens quickly fizzled when I considered how rare I would have both the opportunity and the finances to justify it.
I've just settled on a 400/5.6 for now, until something like a snappy DFA 300/4 comes along...

secondly, there's no way to lock the zooming part, which, if I have it extended towards the greater telephoto range, it tends to slide back in if it's pointed upwards (e.g., attempting to track birds in flight).
The zoom can creep when the lens is pointed up or down, more so when the lens has had a lot of use and the seals are less tight, but it won't/can't creep if you hold the zoom ring, which to me is a natural way of holding the lens and allows you to rapidly re-frame as required, so I'd say it's not an issue if hand holding.

Cheers,
Terry

As a pipedream, which of the two lenses would you want to see in a DFA?
300/4 or 300/2.8 (considering the extra weight and size it would have)?

  • more an 400mm f4.x (like the Minolta) than the 300mm f2.8
  • recent/current lens designs are much more lightweight than 30 years ago when F/FA-lenses were on the market.
    1987: Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L USM = 2855kg
    2011: Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM: 2440kg (-15%)

For astro it would be a good lens and I do a lot of astro shooting. Since I already have the 1.4X-L converter it becomes even more appealing. I did look and saw that it was pending sale so that takes the pressure off.
