I will add this comment: consider selling the DA* 200, at least if your copy of the FA* 80-200 is as good as mine was. My FA* ZOOM, in head to head testing on the k-3 was as good or better than the DA* prime.

The only thing I see lacking is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens. I do use mine fairly often. I have as many or more compared to your list, including most of the same. My view is this- how many tools do you have in your garage? How often do you use all of them, even though you are perhaps not a mechanic or doing carpentry on the side? Same principle.

As to the FA* 28-70 and 80-200mm, they are great on your Z-1p, and you might try them out on your K-1 also, as well as your K-3 II. With their power-zoom function, which automatically activates AF as you zoom, the AF in real life might be quicker than the DFA lenses, as focus is reached as soon as you have zoomed to frame your subject. In fact, the latter lens is your only fast tele zoom other than the DA 50-135mm for APS-C, and a very fine one.

Nothing wrong at all in having both APS-C and FF systems. The first when needing more compact, lighter carrying, and good for backup.

Your FA 35mm, 28mm, 31mm and 43mm are all great alternatives for walk-around general purpose primes on your FF body, in a compact form. Each offers a different FOV and perspective. The 43mm provides the most accurate perspective, with from-to-back ratios of objects in most scenes having a natural look.

As to selling off- I see no sense in having both "F" and "FA" 50mm f/1.7 as they are optically identical. I'd get rid of all "M" lenses. Do you ever use them? Maybe just for their MF properties? Your other lenses having an aperture ring will work fine on your MX.

I also have a PZ-1p, bought brand new back in the day. I consider it the most full-featured Pentax 35mm film body, operationally the predecessor to modern Pentax DSLR cameras.

I’d get rid of everything but the FA limiteds and a macro. I’d replace the telephotes with one of the newer Zoom offerings. Maybe keep a wide angle zoom if you need it.

Well, yes, in terms of being a collector- or if building your tool kit. You have other very fine 35mm lenses, but that DA 35mm ltd is a macro, if you have much interest in macro at that FL and as far as I know is not compatible with FF use, so it is similar to a 50mm macro on FF. Your DFA 100mm macro is.

If I had the chance to go back and do things over again lens wise (and money wasnt an issue) & had to choose from that list, I would get:

DFA 100 macro
FA* 24mm
FA 35 2.0 (I would get the HD version)
FA 50 1.7
FA* 28-70

Great collection of lenses! I'm going through a similar mental exercise....

I would keep all your crop lenses, except maybe the DA*16-50 as you have the DFA24-70, which is better in almost all respects, and not much bigger.
The DA*55, DA*200 and DA*300 are also excellent on full frame.
Certainly consider adding the DA*11-18, and/or the DA10-17 Fisheye Zoom

As for full frame glass:
Keep the FA20, DFA24-70, DFA28-105, FA31, FA43, FA77, DFA100WR, FA135 for sure.
Of the three 28/2.8's and three 50/1.7's, maybe keep one of each. I'd probably go for the F series variant in both cases.
The FA*24/2.0 and FA35/2.0 might be worth keeping if you value the wider aperture over the DFA24-70. The FA* zooms seem redundant to me with the other options you have available.
I can't see any great need for you to keep the M series lenses, all of which are duplicated in later series equivalents.

Let us know what you decide!

I recently sold my DA* 200. Loved the lens, but decided that on the occasions I used it, I would rather have a zoom. Since you have the FA* 80~200, I'm wondering how often you use the DA* 200. Of course its compact size is an asset.
Interestingly, my recent re-acquisition of a DA*200 has made me question the need to keep my DFA*70-200.

I am hugely impressed by your collection but you don't have a fisheye lens yet. I can recommend the...

Oh wait, you want to sell things. Sorry, can't help with that. I haven't sold a lens in three decades.

My collection is getting a bit out of hand, pretty much all of them I would consider "wanted", certainly not needed.
I have a K1-II and a K3-II (+hardly used MX and Z-1P) and mainly shoot street/travel
Pretty much all lenses were bought second hand.

Though I'm not sure If I want to part with any of these lenses, I was wondering:
- What would be your "essential" collection out of this list
- (what you would keep for sure, even if not essential)

Perhaps your input could make it easier to consider slimming down.

The list
DA 15 ltd SMC
DA 21 ltd SMC
DA 35 ltd SMC
DA 40 ltd SMC
DA 70 ltd SMC
DA 20-40 ltd
DA 55-300 WR PLM
DA* 55
DA* 200
DA* 300
DA* 16-50
DA* 50-135
DA TC 1.4x
DFA 100 macro
DFA 24-70
DFA 28-105
FA 20 2.8
FA 28 2.8
FA 35 2.0 (non HD)
FA 50 1.7
FA 135 2.8
FA* 24
FA* 28-70
FA* 80-200
FA ltd 31
FA ltd 43
FA ltd 77
F 28 2.8
F 50 1.7
M 28 2.8
M 50 1.7
M 135 3.5

If you think anything is missing, I'm curious as well!
(from a collection point of view I would say the FA*85, DA*11-18, DA*60-250 and any missing current DFA lenses, I'm not really interested in tele stuff)

*updated the list to clarify what variation I have of certain lenses

Interesting replies so far! I was deliberately not giving away too much, to not influence the responses.

A bit more context for now though:
- I have used the DA55-300 and DA300 + TC for a trip with a lot of wildlife and haven't used them since, doesn't make sense to sell them and buy them again when they're needed for the same occasion somewhere in the future.
- There is no pressure to sell whatsoever, just the question if I'm pointlessly hanging on to stuff for the sake of collecting it. Selling things only makes sense if I'm not tempted to buy it back later.
- I use both FF (if weight and size is not an issue) and APS-C (longer periods of time, travel with public transport, non-photocentric days etc.)
- I prefer to use primes, so absolute no go's for me are the DA ltd series and the FA ltd series (though I could part with the ltd 40 and the ltd 35)
- Next to the primes a DA and a DFA lighter weight weather sealed zoom I consider essential (20-40 and 28-105)
- a DA and DFA wide aperture zoom are a nice to have though in reality I hardly use them or any of the other zooms. (seems to be the basic set of zooms though)

The whole thing started out with what I needed, or thought I needed, before it being replaced.
But well...once you get the DA ltd 15, 21, 70, and come across the 40, you might as well add the 35 to complete the set right?
It is also why a lot of it is bought second hand, not needed but nice to have for the right price. Double focal length coverage started to appear after a while.

I'm wondering if there is anyone with the same experience here that eventually decided to sell anything not used?
How did that turn out? What was the reasoning? Any regrets?

Thanks for the input so far!

You're making me feel both a little better and a little worse at the same time. Better in the sense that overall, you've got more gear than I have but worse in that most of mine is just one step above junk by comparison. I know I need to slim down my fleet of seven Pentax camera bodies and I have waaaay too much redundancy in my lenses. Do I really need six DA and DA-L 18-55mm zoom lenses and at least as many 28-80, 90, or 105 mm zooms from various manufacturers? And what about the longer 70 or 80-200 or 300mm zooms?

If I were mentally healthier about such things, I would engage in a wholesale sell-off of all but two, maybe three camera bodies and just one or two lenses from each of the above categories along with a couple of other oddball and junk lenses and flashes that I never use. While all of my camera bodies are older units, it would still be a tough decision:
  • CCD bodies—The unique warmth of a CCD sensor makes me want to keep one of these cameras, even though they are the oldest in my collection. My K10D and my two K200D's are in very nice shape shape and have very low shutter counts. While the K10D would seem an obvious choice, I do like the K200Ds' lighter, more compact form factor and simplified user interface.
  • K20D or Samsung GX20—This is a fairly easy decision since the Samsung has a few mildly annoying quirks that the K20D, which also has a lower shutter count, does not.
  • K-X Blue or K-X black—The blue one has a much lower shutter count and it's just so darned cute that it easily wins out over the black one, even though I don't remember the last time I shot a photo with it.
  • K30—It's my newest camera body and essentially in a category by itself so it's a keeper except for its high shutter count, which brings with it the looming specter of a possible aperture block failure; thus it might actually make more sense to keep the aforementioned blue K-X.
Of course, part of me says it would make sense to sell off all seven cameras and most of my lenses and put the proceeds toward something newer and more capable like a K3II or a KP but while I am fully capable of thinking that logically, carrying through with it is another consideration entirely.

Ha ha- that IS interesting. Having the DA* 50-135mm already, (a favorite) to pair with a Sigma 17-50mm or DA 20-40mm ltd, and the Tokina ATX 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 Pro II for future FF use, I passed on the DFA* 70-200 and went on to the much lighter but very fine DA* 200mm instead. Of course, upon getting a K-1 II, with it I would not pass up a deal on the DFA 28-105mm WR as well.

I would keep this:

FA ltd 31
FA ltd 43
FA ltd 77
DFA 28-105
FA* 80-200
DA 20-40 ltd
DFA 100 macro
FA 20 2.8

Many of your primes can be covered by the ltds, and the wider DA prime ltds can be generalized into the 20-40 ltd (which for the most part isn't slower by much). DFA 28-105 for a walkaround, FA* 80-200 for longer work, and the macro will cover most if not all your needs. From an image quality standpoint this doesn't really lose anything compared to the full list. Feel free to add a few ultrawides if you particularly like shooting those focal lengths.

FWIW I shoot the K-1 Mark II for paid work and always carry an MZ-3 in my bag

I would definitely get rid of the following:

F 28
FA 28
FA 50 1.7
F 50 1.7
M 28 2.8
M 50 1.7
M 135 3.5

If you don't really like heavy zooms, I would consider getting rid of most of your f2.8 zooms (I might keep the FA* 80-200, as that is a rather special lens, despite it's weight).

That is a very nice collection. What is your reason for wanting to sell some? Guilt? Trying to make room in your cabinet? Or perhaps funding for new lenses?

I think I would do the following... mark the last time you used a lens in your list, and if you haven't used it in 2020, or if you used it but ended up not happy with the results, I would consider selling it.

The other comment I'd make is if you mostly shoot just street and shorter focal lengths for the most time, maybe consider keeping the 55-300PLM and selling other telephoto lenses.

I really love my DA*200 more than DFA 70-200 F2.8..
but if I need to keep one, DFA 70-200 f2.8 is the choice.
