Spent this afternoon walking around the street bazaars in Hong Kong. Passed by a small store displaying a bunch of old cameras, most of which were from the plasticky era of the 80-90s. I took a quick glance and saw a very clean looking MZ-10 with a cheap zoom attached and figured I could use another film body so I could shoot two different rolls simultaneously. I picked it up to inspect. The old dude and lady asked me if I needed help, then loaded some batteries into the camera so I could test it, and then I realized that the spring to the in-body flash was broken.
Too bad I thought... But since I was already looking at their stuff, and everything was priced aggressively, I might as well take a look at the pile of lenses in the tupperware containers placed on the ground. A lot of them were heavily scuffed and damaged. I dug around for a few minutes in the hope to find a buried gem, but there was nothing. Not a single lens in there was worth over 50 USD.
The old man saw me struggling for a few minutes, then asked me what I was looking for:
me: K mount lenses
old dude: prime or zoom?
me: ideally prime
old dude: I have this. - reaches into a back cabinet -
Two basically mint lenses. The first, a Rikenon 55mm 1.2. The second, a Pentax-A 50mm 1.2. At first they looked a bit dusty, and there was several bits of price tag sticker grime on the body. I asked the old lady to wipe it with a microfiber cloth. Then I inspected it. Lens markers were pristine, focus rings smooth and evenly dampened, body was clean with extremely minor defects. We're talking like one or two pinprick sized dots of missing paint, something better described as minor imperfections during manufacturing rather than wear and tear. Did the flashlight test, no haze, no fungus, no scratches, and only very very minor dust. I asked him where did he get these, and he said they were part of a liquidation sale from a camera store closing down. There were originally three Rikenons and this was the last one.
The Rikenon was priced at 1/3 of eBay.
The Pentax-A was priced at 30% discount of eBay.
