SMC 500mm f4.5 Lens Hood

I recently bought an SMC 500mm f4.5 lens but it didn't come with the from lens cap. I hate leaving the front open to the elements. Does anyone have any idea about something I can use for a lens cap for this? I found something that might work on B&H

Op/Tech Hood Hat

But I'd prefer something a little more substantial.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What's the filter size? I bought a 112mm aluminum cap for my Tamron on Ebay.

112mm rings a bell. I'm out of the country right now so I can't measure it. I'll check out ebay and see what I can find.

Thanks!

edit: I just found the lens on ebay and it says the cap size is 118mm.

Lens hood work very well. I have a nylon one with a hard face over the lens cap opening that velcros closed with my 300/2.8. I'm happy with it.

The Optech hoods are very nice, I have a couple of those. Much more convenient, than the original metal cap for the 500/4.5. I would recommend an Optech anytime over the original thing.

I ordered one of the Op/Tech lens hoods but somehow ended up with the wrong size, lol. Once I get home I'll try it on another lens and probably order the correct size for the 500mm. I would like to find something with a hard cover at the end, though. It may not be necessary but I'd feel better about the lens being protected that way.

I can understand the hard cover idea, because the big front element is nearly unprotected. You could simply cut a round disc out of foam (I use sleeping mats for that) and put it into the Optech hood, it should have ample room for it.
