I don't think photozone gives the 77 a very good testiment. For CA and softness wide open I almost didn't get it.
But then I see all the field reviews and posts like this, well.......

I have a good idea - maybe we can create the new thread called "85mm portrait's lens"? And post the test, sample shots and etc., in those thread? We have many lens for compare (and mayby from other system like Nikon and Canon)

Takumar 85mm /1.8
Helios 40-2, 85mm /1.4
Pentax A* 85mm /1.4
Pentax FA* 85mm /1.4
Pentax 85mm /2.0 soft
...

And the Zeiss 85mm Zk

but it would really best if they were all taken by the same photographer at the same time of day, in the same location.

But that's what made it so easy to tell which lens took the shot!

When I first saw the series, I did note that the pictures seemed framed for the 85, then taken with the 77, so as photos, the 85's were more successful.

But that was me in my head defending the 77

But amazing set of comparison shots overall! Thanks for this, Frank.

Hey, you are right about that one. I did take the FA85 ones first, then tested 77 w/o change position. Probably not fair for 77

I never noticed any CA or softness problem w/ the 77 for actual shooting. It's better than most reviews claimed imo

Most 85mm lenses are excellent performers I guess. But would be nice if some guys can get together and do a thorough comparison

[QUOTE=kenyee;392063]I think the extra bokeh is from the longer focal length of the 85.
The 85 also looks warmer, but the 77 looks sharper to me until f/4 when they're about the same...

This was my thought exactly!

I have the 77 and the Zeiss 85mm. In my very very informal tests I have found the 77 to be superior at higher (f/4+) apertures when it comes to sharpness, color is identical between the two IMO.
