I wanted a 50mm lens...

... so bought a Pentax 35mm f2.4 DA off Amazon/Pentax Store for £83 inc delivery.

I thought that was a decent deal. Just hope it lives up to being the plastic fantastic people say it is.

New camera next, not sure when though!

Hey! Yes I have this lens, it's a very good lens. Efficent considering the low price, good sharp photos, nice focus. I would say definitely good choice. What camera you will be using it with?

The DA 50mm F/1.8 would have been a good choice but i'm sure you will be happy with the DA 35mm F/2.4 especially if your using it on a crop sensor. The 35mm F/2.4 outperforms it's price for sure!

I think you'll like 35mm. I don't use that focal length much but when I did I really thought it was quite suitable for environmental portraits.

I don't understand this thought process. You wanted a 50mm, so you bought a 35mm.

Well you see, if they bought the 50mm when they wanted the 50mm then they would stop shopping for lenses. Now since they bought a 35mm when they wanted a 50mm, they can still justify buying a 50mm since they didn't buy the 50mm!

So it's 2 lenses for 1. I'd do the same if I could afford it... Welcome to G.A.S.

My man the genius here doing the pondering...

True... buy a 50mm. Do you need a 50mm "screen", in crop yeah you might need guidance (around 35mm would do, so OP has it covered). Now, do you want a 50 / nifty 50 = then hey.... limits is the sky!

I had the 35mm f2.4 but swapped it for the limited. There isn't a massive difference in IQ and the 2.4 is faster but the limited is a limited get to know it. It is a massively capable lens and probably more useful on APSC than 50mm. Remember, crop isn't zoom it literally takes the same image but crops it hence a 35 is always a 35 & a 50 is always a 50, you just get more in shot with the 35 enjoy it

Why the 35mm and not the 50mm?

It is as other suggested related to the APS-C sensor and my dodgy attempt at humour

Sadly still my Samsung GX10 which is ancient now. We are in the throws of moving to Anglesey (house sold, need to go in to rented before new home is built), the camera upgrade is sadly down the pecking order at the moment but is coming!

Having said that I'm still enjoying the GX10 and getting out taking photos

You won't be disappointed with your 35mm. I have both Plastic Fantastic (35mm and 50mm), but I use the 35mm much more often. The field of view with that lens is suitable in many situation. And the rendering of this lens is superb!
