^ This!

Also, does anyone know of any good older 28mm lens designs? There is the 31mm limited, but for the size and the focal length it's not quite a 43mm equivalent FOV on aps-c...

I'd settle for new coatings on the 77.

I'll second this one. Especially if they can retain the compact size of the original lens. I'm not loving the size of new mc-manssion style lenses that seem all the rage (I have a few new D-FA's in my lens harem, love them but hate the bulk).

The FA-28 is a sweet little lens. It's not a Limited but it holds its own for most part. It's smaller than the 31 but larger than the 43.

The FA 28 f2.8 is a good lens. SMC Pentax-FA 28mm F2.8 AL Reviews - FA Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Ricoh should definitely consider doing a refresh of a lens like the FA*400 f/5.6. Canon has an old 400 f/5.6 and it was very popular at the time, and that too is outdated. A 400 f/5.6 is relatively affordable compared to a 400 f/4, lighter, and easy to take anywhere. It's a good compromise when you can't take a longer lens. A new 400 f/5.6 should be tack sharp wide open with a fast focusing ultrasonic motor.

An HD version of the SMC Pentax-FA* 250-600mm F5.6 ED [IF], with weather sealing and internal AF drive, and retaining the power zoom, but with remote control, so you can keep your eye on the viewfinder, and your hand off the zoom ring.

FA 600mm f/4 … don't even bother to "refresh" it, just make a few.
All the design work has been done, so no expense necessary there.
Keep the price "sensible" and they'd sell like hot cakes!

The wr/aw to some old ones would be nice.

The 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro with a PLM motor and, possibly, focus limiter.
Might make it a reasonable amount bigger (assumption) but would be an epic portrait lens if it could be around the same size, with WR and a bit quieter.

I have a K24 3.5. It's brilliantly sharp. Would love to see an updated version of it.

I agree wholeheartedly!!!

A new 400/5.6 is exactly what we need to fill out the series - 200/2.8, 300/4.0, 400/5.6 - PERFECT!!

The last sentence is the problem. The price won't be sensible and won't sell like hot cakes. Besides, it isn't up to modern standards. When in sale it was made to order.
In the age of high ISO the speed of F:4 isn't really needed in such a lens, and most won't find that it is worth it. It weight and cost twice as much as a 600/5.6 - and there already is the 560/5.6......

---------- Post added 11-30-20 at 12:30 PM ----------

The 150-450 replaces any 400/5.6 lens. It is a focal length/speed combination that is replaced by zooms......

I haven't noticed anything wrong with the coating on the 77 Limited....

There's the K 28mm f2.0 "Hollywood" which is said to be very good for the era. The M 28mm f2.0 is supposed to be nearly as good and is more compact. I would make a big assumption that this lens was also cheaper to manufacture vs. the K. The 28mm f2.8 design shared between the mk2 M, A, and F series is supposed to be pretty good as well (I own the mk2 M series version and think it's quite nice). The FA 28mm is maybe not quite as good as this optic wide-open. There are also 28mm f3.5's but I'm not familiar with any of them so I'll just move on.

Any of these would be decent options for an updated 28. I suggested the M 28 f2.0 as a good compromise between size, weight, cost, performance, and max aperture and I definitely agree that a 24mm to 28mm prime would be very useful for a crop shooter.
