Is this fungus?

Hi!

Here is another of those "is it fungus" thread, I appreciate your comprehension

I got a 50mm SMC-A 1.7 from eBay for less than 40 dollars. The auction said "fungus free" but, upon close inspection I found this on the inside of the rear element:

Do you think it is fungus?

The perils of eBay. That's definitely fungus... looks pretty bad.

What a pity, I liked the lens. At least it was not that expensive.

It is either fungus or separation of the cement binding a lens group. Both can present in a similar fashion, though yours looks more like fungus. In either case, the lens is not "clean" from a sales perspective.

Yep, fungus. I would ask for my money back from the seller, or if you feel adventurous, I request a partial refund and then clean the lens yourself. The inside of the rear element is the easiest to get to.

Frank, that's some awesome fungus on your glasses. Very cool! Did you get them from eBay?

@farfisa: How do you mean? Where can fungus do more damage than in a lens? (Is fungus a word from medical terminology, too?)

Sorry, yes--the medical angle / bad joke. I was afraid there'd be pictures of toe fungus. :P

Well, here in Singapore, if you leave your sunglasses in the drawer w/o using them for several months, you'd see something on your sunglasses too

And as a matter of fact, I bought the sunglasses from the States about 10 years ago when I was there. Still wear them now, with these nice looking fungus on of course

Actually I'm thinking about it, since it is very troublesome (and expensive) for me to return the lens to the seller. I paid 37 dollars for the lens, I would spend about the same just by going to the border and sending it back.

The lens works very well, I do not see any degradation in the photos taken with it, but I feel uneasy about mounting it again on the camera, I feel like it would infect it and/or my other lenses . However, as far as I have read, spores are everywhere, floating in the air, so one part of me thinks it would not make a big difference if I would keep using it.

Hey, the seller didn't lie, he said "fungus free", so as long as he didn't charge extra for the fungus, it was indeed free...

On a more serious note, people who sell stuff like this should be banned. Of course ebay will never do that because then they loose money.

Some fungus yes, but it shouldn;t affect the image quality since it is in the periphery of the rear element
Put your lens in a puch with some silica gel to prevent it from growing any more.

Do you think it is safe to keep using the lens as long as I store it isolated from the other lenses and/or make sure I keep them in a dry place?
