I can't say why it's so popular, but plenty of reviews and posts here show why folks love it (and why some don't).

The DA 15mm Limited is my 'foreground lens': I use it mainly to highlight foreground subjects while showing their environment and context. The lens has a short minimum focus distance of 15 cm, which can be very useful for getting close to a subject. I generally don't use it to capture wide landscape vistas.

I agree with this being the great foreground lens and often too wide for many landscapes. But it is also very portable, this morning I went outn for a hike going light, DA*300 & TC on the camera, DA 15 in my pocket. Not a great photo below, but without that portability It would have stayed in the bag in the truck.

It's a DA Limited - isn't that enough? It is for me. It's not my most frequently used lens but I wouldn't be without it.

My 15mm LTD always competed with a Sigma 10-20 when I shot with a K5. The Sigma worked with the filters that I had so the 15mm would be saved for when I wanted to go compact.

When I used it though the 15mm never let me down and for some scenes you just have to include enough background and sky to convey the environment as it was at the moment of capture. And that's why I think the 15 worked in these examples captured from the same location within minutes of each other.

The rest of the story is that fully half of the respondents that did not own the lens will probably have ordered a copy by end of thread.

I always suggest the DA 14/2.8 when the discussion is about the DA 15 Limited - mainly, because I'm a contrarian and the DA 14 is soooo bloody good...

Of course this is where another contrarian brings up the equally huge and fast Samyang 14/2.8. No AF, but who can focus these bad boys anyway?

Compact, beautifully made, highly flare resistant, lovely stars (SMC version), good centre sharpness, lovely rendering of foreground object with oof background, specialises in drama. What else do you need?

Well, if you need edge-to-edge sharpness for a large group photo, it's not ideal. Use the DA40 and step back several paces.

This is basically my current walking kit - K-3 II, 15 ltd, 20-40, and the PLM. It's a fantastic trio that covers pretty much anything you might encounter.

I own both. The 14 focuses closer which is great but it isn’t as small and the build isn’t as jewel like. The flare handling on the 15 is better but field curvature I think is worse. It is hard to say either lens is the best but the small size of the da 15 helps make it more likely to be with me - but if I have a special shot with foreground emphasis I will likely grab the da 14.

OK, anyone's head exploded yet? No? OK good, let me explain. I have the 70, 40, 35 & 21mm limiteds. I feel the 40 & 35mm cover the same ground and I have the same feeling about the 21mm and the 15mm. As the 15mm is the dearest of the limited primes I haven't been tempted but one has slipped into my price window and is so tempting. The trouble is I don't want to spend £250 on a lens I will rarely use, so, what does it do that the 21mm doesn't? Why is it so popular and why does it hold its value? And, what do you use it for?
I used to have the 3 lenses, 10-17, 15, and 21 at the same time. IMHO the Field of View of the 21 and 15 are not close. I used to think they are close enough to skip one of them, but when I own both, I can see the differences after spent enough time with them.

Rendering:
I like the rendering of 15 over 10-17. I mainly take night photos in the city. So I really love the starburst of the green ring 15. The first time I saw the starburst effect from 10-17, I was like, this is ... ... criminally ugly! Even without a starburst in the image, 15 and 21 still look better than 10-17 day or night for me. Like any Pentax Limited lense. It has its own imperfection but instead of degrading the image quality, the imperfection of the limited seem to make the image look more alive. You have a lot of DA limited, I am sure you know what I mean.

Field of View:
15 is not wide enough after I see what 10-17 can do. On the other hand, I can stitch 2 - 3 images of 21 if I really want the rendering similar to 15. And switches to 10-17 when I want wide to the extreme and de-fish it if I have to. I later sold the 15 because it stays home for almost a year. I still miss the rendering of 15 but it is just not wide enough for me. And the prime cannot do zoom burst. That is another reason I let it go.

The DA 15 much wider than the DA 21. Assuming an APS-C camera, the 21 gives you 59 degrees horizontally across the frame, while the 15 yields 77 degrees.

The DA 15 is great for architecture, landscapes if you have foreground, and night cityscapes. Its strengths are contrast, color rendering, and flare resistance. Its weakness is corner sharpness; it is certainly usable but not as good as some other lenses.
