Elicar lens

Has anyone had any experience with the Elicar brand? Specifically a 55mm f2.8 macro.

The Elicar lens is a re badged version of the Vivitar 55mm 2.8 Macro. They came also in 42 Screw Mount, A and M versions. The Elicar looks a little fancier than the Vivitar but is optically identical.

They also sold as Panagor macro.

The lens was most likely made by Komine, a well know Japanese lens maker back then. Extra sharp lens!

I have the "A" version of the 55/2.8 macro lens and it's not bad. It is heavy (sturdy) and I have experienced zero problems using it on my K100d, including zero mounting/dismounting problems (aka, Ricoh pin problems). I haven't thoroughly checked out its macro capabilities, but you do have to be at very close range for it to be effective and you really have to crank the focus ring to take it to macro range. Color and sharpness not as nice as A or M lenses in the same 50mm length but still OK.

I have both the 55mm and 90mm Vivitar versions of this lens in M42 mount and although I now use an "A" version Vivitar 100mm f2.8 macro (Pre 105mm f2.5 series 1 lens) I still sometimes go back to them.
Excellent 1:1 macro capability.

Would not Vivitar be a rebadged Elicar, since Elicar seems to be the original equipment manufacturer as Vivitar never made anything at all?

Elicar, Vivitar, Rokunar, Panagor, Panagor-Admiral and Soligor were all resellers of this line of Komine design and manufactured lens and available in many popular mounts including M42, P/K and A. The macro series was 55mm Macro, 90 MM macro and 135 MM 'close focus' .

I have just received an Elicar V-HQ 55mm f2.8 Macro for Minolta fit to sell for an elderly friend which came with a couple of Minolta 300's so might give it a shot as there is an outdated film to use up. So looking forward in seeing results.
