I've seen this video a few month ago, and you are right, it is interesting. Thank you to refresh our memories or to give the info to those who haven't seen it yet.

I'm surprised how much handling there is, I thought machines would do a lot more.

That's an old video. Take a look at how our competitor Canon makes their lenses here. Look at the number of steps involved in making an L tele.

Thanks for the link, like Arpe commented I'm surprised how much hand build is done here.

But also note how many years of experience those involved in making lenses have. With precision manufacturing shifting out of Japan, a lot of the experience will inevitably be lost.

WEIRD, watch the show all the time and never heard a ladies voice. Difference between the Canadian and Discovery versions, maybe?

there's also the video on a canon tele lens and the narrator kept on repeating the entire name of the lens " canon four hundred milimeter eee fff 5.6" or whatever the lens was.... the interesting part about that vid was that the lens is hand made.

sorry, don't remember the link

edit: ah that Canon Museum link is it, although i watched the whole thing on youtube in one shot. it was 500mm f4

Just for the record, most consumer lenses are made just this way, but a very large part of the production is automated. Specialty lenses, Limited for instances, will be almost completely handcrafted. But for an average lens, computers and robotized assemblies will do it. Just as well, most of the time.
