MIke Johnston's Gear o' The Week (3/9/2021) - HD DA 35/2.8 Ltd

The Online Photographer still has a soft spot in his heart for this lens...

"Gear o' The Week:

If I could shoot with any 50mm focal-length-equivalent lens, it would not be unobtanium: it would be the relatively modest, relatively older HD Pentax 35mm ƒ/2.8 DA Macro Limited on APS-C (it has recently been revised with new coatings). I don't know how it measures and couldn't care less. If you care first and foremost about pictures, especially prints, it is one beautiful lens. Luverly. As a normal too. This link is a portal to Amazon, through which most anything you purchase will be credited to TOP. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
B&H Photo also has the Magic Macro, naturally."

So have I, although I "only" own the smc version. It's one of those lenses that just keep giving. Shot in my garden, only days ago:

That lens is, in my opinion, the best of the DA limited lenses because:
- it's sharp edge to edge from wide open
- unlike other DA ltd lenses, the DA 35 macro ltd has longer focus throw, i.e more precise focus compared to other DA ltd, especially near infinity
- 50mm FF equivalent
- small and well built.

The DA 35 macro ltd was the last I sold from my apsc kit, because it was my preferred lens, it broke my heart when I sold it.

Gorgeous Pics. I have been going back and forth from this lens to the 100 macro and back and forth. You might have just made up my mind since i do shoot apsc- and do not aspire to ff.

It's so good, but I feel a bit guilty about not using it much. I can't seem to get comfortable with 35mm on APS-C.

Tomorrow I'll slap it on my K-70 and see what happens...

I've read the reviews on it and I was sort of lusting for it last year in March but we had a bit of disruption come along during that time. Who knew what was going to happen so I put off buying very much but in retrospect I should have bought one when the price was $100 lower than it is now.....Oh well. I have the SMC Pentax-DA 35mm F2.4 AL now but it is not in the same league as the HD Pentax-DA 35mm F2.8 Limited Macro. I've got a lot of justifying to do soon.

Superb images, Marc!! I pulled the trigger on a new silver copy from B&H it will arrive on the 16th of March, I can't wait to use it. All of my Limiteds are silver. Now I'm through with lens buying, no more.

Enjoy your 35 macro, Larry, as I trust you will. Doubles as a capable standard too, when super-fast aperture is not a concern. Bruges, W Flanders, summer of 2019:

Nice to see TOP calling out the quality of a Pentax lens, he doesn't talk about modern Pentax that often that I've seen. I only have the DA 2.4 plastic fantastic, but I'd like to upgrade to this guy at some point, none the least for the macro capability. If it's any better than the DA 35 2.4 then it's excellent indeed.

If you should want to make this your only macro lens, consider, though, that for true macro you have to get really close to your subject at this focal length. In fact, there have been occasions where I had to retract the built-in lens hood as to not touch what I was trying to capture, or where I had to reposition for unobstructed lighting. Not all insects are happy about something sneaking up so closely on them either. I own no other macro, so I've learned to live with these limitations (for the time being), but I do like the unique, a bit more "environmental" perspectives I'm getting with the 35.
