The older camera is for the debug mode to convert the SDM to screwdrive.

I would think it's a no brainer.
I jumped for it!
Took it home and did the conversion with my K-5.
Works on screwdrive perfectly!

Thanks everyone, especially @UncleVanya for the suggestions, knowledge, and confidence on reviving this excellent lens!

Bing!

I think that you'll find that the 50-135 pairs nicely with some of your other lenses, to provide a versatile and relatively compact, high-IQ kit. For example, the 50-135 + DA 35mm Limited or 50-135 + 55-300. It's a great lens.

Enjoy!

Thanks!

I plan to get the 16-50 PLM to pair with the 50-135mm for a high IQ kit and may retain my 18-135 (was debating selling) to pair with my 55-300 PLM as a lightweight kit.

This also means I'm a 16-50 2.8 away from having a Holy Trinity!
So exciting!

IT WORKED! Unbelievable!
I reloaded the old profile, gave the lens a smack or two, twisted the focus ring fast back and forth from infinite to min, and BOOM!
The SDM works again!
There's the smallest bit of noise, almost a 1/4 second of quite grind noise while it focuses, maybe a piece of dirt on a gear, but it works!
I can't believe I got a working 50-135 for so cheap!

Wonderful! Whichever AF type, and some say the screw-driven is a bit faster, this is one fine lens. No doubt you'll love it! And it handles beautifully. Great design. Sure beats toting a DFA 70-200mm f/2.8 on a K-1 II body!

That should prove to be excellent pairing, and good planning. I am a firm believer in having both a lighter alternative with still very good quality, yet with more reach and versatility, while at the same time a fine low light and fast action premium setup available. Each can be very useful their own right, when conditions are appropriate.

Thanks for the comment!

I agree that screw drive is faster. If fact by looking into it, it seems that screw drive may be about 20% faster! however the screw drive isn't that fast anyway (spoiled with the PLM), therefore I much prefer the silent SDM even if it is a bit slower!

The optical results from this lens is already just so exciting! Incredible performance!

I haven’t seen any focus speed difference with good working sdm vs screw drive. However I have seen failing sdm act slower than good sdm and screw drive but it is possible there’s variation.
