FA* 300mm f/4.5 lens hood replacement

I know this is a recurring theme for FA* 300 f/4.5 owners, given the ease of which its lens hood cracks at the base, but I could not see any information about either repairs or replacements of this lens hood. I do tend to shoot outdoors, so a lens hood is a necessity, and I'm hoping to get a replacement for my cracked one that doesn't sit on its mount well anymore.

If I could find a replacement hood for the MH-RBC67 anywhere, I'd buy it. However, since it is no longer sold new, I'm also wondering whether any of the alternative 67mm threaded lens hoods (such as the PH-RBK67 for the DA 60-250 f/4 or the PH-RBE67 for the FA 24-90) would fit the FA* 300.

Any experience from others here?

Both those alternative hoods are the bayonet type. The one for the 24-90 would not be suitable even if it fitted as it is too short. If you can post some photos of the hood mounting lugs on the FA* with some exact measurements we can have a look at what we all own to see if you are in with a chance of a lucky fit with another hood.

The alternative is to look at a generic 67mm threaded hood.

The FA* 300 hood fits on the lens bayonet lugs:

What generic 67mm hoods do you know fit this lens?

Is this the same one you're looking for? Pentax MH-RBC 67mm Lens Hood for FA-300mm 34776 | C.R. Kennedy

CRK are indicating low stock which suggests they have what you're looking for. Lot of coin though.

I can say, the hoods from he FA 645 lenses, do not actually have the same bayonet fitting the K-mount FA lenses use.

But.

I have fitted a bayonet 645 hood from the FA*120 macro on my FA*85/f1.4. It's not an exact fit, but.... It does lock on..Bit fiddly, but, it does work.

Never had it come off when I didn't want it to. just depends on what you consider to be "ok".

The other 2 lugs are solid , no gaps.
You can unscrew ( 3x screws ) and remove the locking ring from the hood.
It is very unusual , it has 3 locking springs , two just rounded + 1x with the pointy tip to match ( lock / engage with ) the gap as in your photo.
Perhaps 3D printing?
There is obviously the filter thread , it could be used with the right sized generic hood.
The PH-RBK67 has completely different lock.
You need to look for something older , perhaps Adaptall 2 or Tokina.

I have found that I can get a hood with a broken tab to mount well if I put some quality 3M black electrical tape over the base on the inside of the mount on the hood where it meets the lens. I only put the tape on the side with the broken plastic and this tape is stretchy. If you turn it with moderate force it slides over the lens tabs and holds firm. After taking the hood on and off the lens about 8-10 times the tape needs to be replaced with a fresh piece. A little annoying but it costs about two cents for that length of tape and you can keep a whole roll in your camera bag.

If you have not looked at it, the Rick Housh list of nikon hoods is quite complete w/ hood dimensions.

Nikon Lens Hood Specifications - Rick Housh

Unfortunately looking at it (I only use it for shorter FL) most of the longer FL's are missing complete dimensions, but do have the applicable lens FL/aperture and filter size.

Another source of (NIKON) lens filter size and lens hood ID is following:

I'd be happy to design a hood and 3D print it, but I have neither the lens nor the hood. If someone wants to send me a broken but complete hood I can make a new one.

I'm assuming the original hood is plastic. If it's metal it may not be possible to make a functional 3D printed one.

Thanks for sharing that. It’s not the same hood, and fancy spending that much on a hood. You’d think it should come with a lens at that price, and they have the gall to say that it is a reduced price!

Thanks although there doesn’t seem to be an English translation for their website so that I can be confident in putting my credit card details in the right spot.

I’ll give that a try - I tried a different tape that just didn’t keep the inner ring together well enough to work.
