I just received my DA 17-70mm SDM lens.
Although focussing itself is very silent the lens often seems to hunt a lot and during the hunting it makes a "ticking, cllicking" noise, like there might be some mechanical "play" in the focussing mechanism.

Questions:
- anybody wth a SDM lens has the same experience with the sound during hunting? DA 17-70mm in particular
- Is it normal for a DA 17-70mm to hunt relatively often (more than the kit lens)?

I've played with both DA* and have the 50/135 and i can't say i've heard any kinda of noise...

I will go to B&H tomorrow, and i if I have the chance, i'll test the 17-70, because it could be the SDM on the DA is slightly different from the SDM on DA*

Regarding the hunting, u gotta remember this is a f/4 lens. Hecka, even the DA* hunts on low light situations...

Point is that the lens also hunts in daylight conditions and even worse than the kit lens. Also focus loch especially at 70mm is a problem sometimes.

Hi Kees, I have found some hunting in contrasty situations even in natural light, or for macro at 70mm, I am not sure if there is a pattern. I think it happens towards the longer focal lengths but I have not done systematic tests. Perhaps it is due to the softness of the lens at f4. But no clicks or ticks, just plain sdm "short" hunting ("brr-brr-brr").
