Ultrawide for the KP

I am considering getting something wider to complement my Sigma 17-70 mm on the KP. I have been looking at the HD 11-18 mm and the Samyang 10 mm (I don't consider the Pentax 12-24 mm an option as it is not much cheaper than the 11-18 mm which I guess is superior).

What would be your choice and why? I notice that a couple of users complain that the Samyang is difficult to focus. Any other options?

Here is some reading for you:

DA 12-24mm vs Sigma and Tamron 10-24mm Comparison Review - Design and Handling | PentaxForums.com Reviews

I personally purchased the Tamron after reading the article at the second link. I find it adequate in general but rather too soft at 10mm or 11mm. I've only used it on a 16MP K-5

I just received DA* 11-18 , it feels superb , it will be my favourite cropped lens , I think.
I also have Sigma 8 - 16 , will need to take it for a walk.

Unfortunately, the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 was discontinued for the Pentax mount. I have it and like it a lot. Other than that, as far as a zoom lens is concerned, only the excellent DA* 11-18mm f/2.8 is left available new. It is a very fine lens with excellent construction including weather sealing. However, that said, it is also a sizable and weighty lens. Depends on how wide you are looking to get. The DA 15mm Ltd is amazingly compact, will get significantly wider than 17mm, and can be packed along while remaining hardly noticeable in the process.

The 11-18 which is a beautiful and brilliant lens and as it is a Pentax lens you can the use the in camera corrections if necessary! It is also WR which the 12-24 and the others you mentioned are not. The 12-24 is no longer available it seems and was much cheaper than the 11-18 is. The latter is about € 600 more expensive new.

I like the Sigma 10-20 F3.5

Another possibility is the DA 10-17 Fisheye. At 10mm the angle of view is as large as 180°. At 17mm, the angle of view is similar to a 10mm rectilinear wide angle lens and fisheye effect is minimal.

The 10-17 is also lightweight, and Fisheye effect can be lessened or exploited creatively by adjusting composition.

I have the HD DA 10-17/3.5-4.5 Fisheye, the HD DA* 11-18/2.8 and the SMC DA 15/4.0 Limited. All three are superb, but complimentary as far as their strengths and weaknesses. I can't imagine parting with any of them.

I had the Sigma 8-16/4.5-5.6 for a while a few years ago. It is also a remarkable lens, which gave me some memorable images. But it's big and heavy, and I decided that the rare time I needed the field of view of an 8mm rectilinear I could de-fish the 10-17.

I have the sigma 10-20 with the variable aperture (4-5.6?) I also have the 8mm f3.5 rokinon fisheye. Both are enjoyable to use. I like having both

The 12-24 not being much cheaper sounds odd to me. By now its used only I guess? I paid 1/6th of the price of the 11-18 for my 12-24...

Not using it anymore though.

Thanks for all the inputs.

Denmark is a small country and there aren't many photoshops carrying Pentax. I could only find one carrying the Pentax 12-24 mm (price DKK 8600). The 11-18 mm can be had for DKK 10000. Perhaps they can be found cheaper abroad but for an investment like this, I prefer a "local" shop, which makes it easier to return/complain in case of faults.

The Sigma 10-20 3.5 is a good option. The slower version is good too.

Dk8600 seems way overprized. That's about 1150,-EUR right?
Used ones in good condition from reputable sellers are available in Germany usually between 400 und 500 EUR.

Certainly not an everyday lens, but I had so much success with a 10-17 Pentax fish-eye for a band shoot this past weekend. I was lucky to find it in my slingbag from a previous shoot since I hadn't thought of packing it. With our front and back-stage access I got some beautiful images with an entirely different perspective, many perfectly captured in black and white. IMO every serious shooter should have one just for those creative fun photo ops.
