Why remove “Takumar”

Got a pristine sample of Pentax first zoom lens, original case, even has untouched filter in plastic still in top of lid. Why would someone remove Takumar? Cant be import related because it says made in Japan on it. Very clean removal, not an accident. Confounded.

I have a Takumar 55/1.8 that has the word "Takumar" blacked out with some sort of permanent tape... Mystery to me as well...

To avoid taxes if imported back in the day (or something of the kind). Same with 'Asahi'

One possibility is that someone was doing some generic product photography and did not wish to include brand names.

May have been used in a film or photo shoot where they didn't want a product or brand name visible.

yes , that is possibly it.
I remember someone was filming something in the Pub.
They have a number of Sony monitors and all name tags were cover with some kind of gaffer tape.
Yes I though that was rather odd.

Many possibilities, but I understand that decades ago non-official importers or gray market dealers would cover or "mutilate" brand names to avoid taxes or duties or even problems with official importers or something along those lines. They would sell "lenses for Pentax cameras" but not advertise as Takumars. I think I saw a similar Canon lens years ago.

Thanks,

Yes, appears to be 'not imported through proper channels' pre 1970

Yes, on Facebook, somebody surmised this was done by US Customs or to avoid trouble from US Customs.

If the lens was a prop on some television series or a movie, permanently blacking out brand names is a routine procedure. Maybe that is one possibility?

I believe they usually tape over the brand names, which is much easier and less noticable than to grind away the brand name.

this has come up before.
It was from customs avoidance as mentioned above. Something to do with servicemen and PX stores back in the 60s and 70s if I recall correctly.

Grey market. Honeywell blocked them from entry, removing the brand made it legal. This reminds me of the K1000.... under 100 on the grey market, wasn’t worth repairing vs replacement. Then the yen /dollar changed and the grey market evaporated
