how about sigma 100-300. it will work with you 1.4 teleconverter. I can't remember but think it won't retain the info but works well together

Yeah, don't know where I came up with that! I would go with a dedicated 400 lens, if within my budget.

Since I already have a 300 F4; this would not be an advantage.

I would swear that I've read your posts stating you've used your Sigma 300/4 with the TC, but I could be mistaken. Is that combo unsatisfactory?

Otherwise, one of the Sigma xx-500mm lenses seem to fit the bill, but they are rather large... which leaves us back with the Sigma 120-400 you mentioned, as well as the less expensive 135-400 model.

Several years ago I was in a situation similar to yours, tried manual-focus lenses and really took to it. But not everyone is into that sort of thing, and they are primes, and the good old glass tends to be heavy.

That is a nice 300 all be it an older one even if it does have the Zen barrel coating. I have it and still use it a lot, especially since I got it at a stole it price. It is small enough to do handheld shots with and has some good reach.

or the 400 F2.8
Did you mean the sigma 400/5.6 as a 400/2.8 would be fantastically expensive and those are huge heavy monsters (I have the A* 400/2.8).

There really aren't any lenses I lack at the moment. Even so I've found myself searching deals on the 150-450 lately. I have to keep reminding myself I wouldn't use it that often.

I think we are clearly in an area where Pentax is behind the competition. Sounds like a used bigma is the best option.

I have the Tamron 70-200, that I use with a Tamron 1.4 TC. I'm very happy with the results, but want a little more "reach".

I can't go over $600-800; so any suggestions? I do want to stay with a zoom, if possible. I have a 300, but use it seldom.
Does the Sigma 300 not work with the Tamron TC?

It does; but I just don't use it much. The faster 70-200 works better for me.

I would suggest the Sigma 150-500 DG OS for Pentax. Either that or the Sigma 120-400 (for Pentax) as you mentioned. I use the 150-500 on my Pentax K-5 IIs and it provides really nice results for birds in flight and other wildlife (still or moving, plants or animals). Below is a cropped and resized to 75 percent shot I took of a Blue Jay this Spring with my K-5 IIs with the Sigma 150-500 DG OS for Pentax on it.

I would love to see a Pentax 200-500 or so, along the lines of the 55-300 plm. I'm not holding my breath. doesn't have to be a (*) lens.

I’ve got the tamron 28-300 mashing my teething over the DA300 or 150-450…
