Another vote for the Bigma's , not exactly sure which is the sharpest, most probably the APO versions, but those using will know, otherwise, size and weight wise, the Sigma APO 120-400 would be ok.
I tried the very first 135-400, and was not impressed, one would say I was, unimpressed.

The Sigma 120-400 is not very impressive too. The 150-500 performs better.

I think the budget will be the down fall

unless you get extremely lucky or might be interested in this non zoom " combination " lens with it's M 42 " rear end "

You can use the Sigma 300mm f4 and add a TC.

With a budget just <$800 you won't get many options better than the 55-300 PLM.Maybe the 55-300 WR.

Just found a Pentax DA*300, excellent condition, for $700!

Now, will my Tamron 1.4x PZ MC4 work with it?

Seems redundant with your Sigma 300/4... or is your copy not so good?

I'll be selling the Sigma, as the *300 has been on my wish list for quite some time.

My advice: if you are sticking to apsc (KP I think you said was your next body) then try to eventually grab the DA HD 1.4x as it will setup your in body image stabilization correctly and your Exif data. Plus it’s got great image quality.

Thanks UncleVanya! I'll definitely look for one of those!

I've used the K3, DA*300, Tamron-F 1.4 TC combination for a few years and this post sums up my thoughts.

I don't think it has much effect on shake reduction but I'm still looking for a Pentax DA HD 1.4x at the right price.

Oh, the combination works even better on the K3-III.
