Tokina AT-X pro

Hi Fellow Pentaxians,

I am wondering whether anyone uses Tokina 28-70mm AT-X pro or any other AT-X wide angle lens. Whats the impression and how does the lens compare against third party lenses? I know Tokina is metal, heavy and impressive. What about IQ?

Hope I get some valuable opinion.

The 80-200 isn't too shabby although it weighs a ton...

I have the ATX-Pro 20-35mm F2.8

Lovely lens and great IQ

don't have the 28-70, but if my 20-35 is anything to go by you won't have any issues

Hi Subho,

I have 2 AT-X Pros, coincidentally to the other two answers, an 80-200 f2.8 AT-X Pro AF2, and a 20-35 f2.8 AT-X Pro.

The 80-200, compared to the other offerings from Sigma, Tamron, and Pentax, is not quite as good as the others, but it's really a matter of degree among top quality lenses, and considering the price I paid, an upgrade is not worth the $$$s for the small degree of improved IQ for my purposes. I must confess that the HSM of the new Sigma has brought about at least a twinge of LBA though.

The 20-35 strangely does not focus well with my DS and K10, but is very good with the K20. Not my most used lens because of the limited range, the fact that I have other lenses that cover the range more conveniently, and the fact that I don't really shoot wide that often (much more of a tele type of guy).

FWIW, I also have a couple of MF AT-X SD Tokina ultra tele zooms (100-300/4 and 150-500/5.6) and they are both upper tier optically, IMO. I've also had good response in dealing with their service dept here in the US.

In the range of the lens that you're referencing, I use the Tamron 28-75 XR Di, but it was a close choice between this lens and similar Sigma or Tokina, since they are all pretty highly regarded, and the Pentax version had already been discontinued -- and out of the ballpark in price. At the time-- over 3 years ago, the Tamron was the odds-on favorite, though more recent reports of QC problems have seemed to tarnish this reputation, if they can be believed.

I don't think that you have anything to worry about. If you are VERY critical about IQ, then get the Pentax at whatever cost and trouble locating one might be required. If you're willing to compromise a little, any of the 3rd party alternatives will probably serve you very well. In this FL range, I don't think there is a dog in the bunch (except for the always-possible sample variation).

I have the famours 28-70mm f2.6-2.8. I will say the wide open performance is accepable but not comparable to any of "good" prime lens. 35-50mm focal range has better perform and wide open is much usable. The clutch mechanism for switch auto/manual focus is not easy to get used to. The pka version is not easy/cheap to come by, plus huge filter size cost a lot more than alternatives. I don't know much of the auto focus lenses, but among manual focus lenses, there are so many good primes worth much less than Tokina 270atx is just not the best choice.
