My suggestion would be not to rely on the widest aperture for clearest shots. My rule of thumb is to keep at least two stops away from the widest aperture.

I agree that a pair is better than an all in one. Do you have the 16-85? Does it have AF problems? The Sigma 17-70mm HSM is another option. I am trying to decide between those two lenses.

The 55-300 PLM is a great lens!
I have the 16-85 and 55-300 PLM. An excellent combo that use for 90% of my shots. No problems from either lens.

I am thinking of getting the 18-135 to replace my 18-270. Not as sharp as the nice faster lower zoom range lenses, but sharper than the 18-270 and a good carry around lens.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised. For centre sharpness, the 18-135 is very good right through the range. The limitations (compared to more expensive lenses like the DA 16-85) are more reflected in corner-edge sharpness, in CA, bokeh and general rendering. Even then, for many kinds of shots, you won't see these differences.

I’m partial to the 18-135, the corners can be bad above 70-85mm but that may not matter much. 78mm below.
