Pentax Laowa 100mm f2.8 macro w or wo Tripod collar?

Hi All.

I'm seriously considering this lens, but wanted to ask about the collar. I have the 200mm f4 Macro but the collar hits the front of the camera where the hotshoe is. Would that be true of the collar on this lens as well?

Which exact camera you are concerned about?

Either the K1, K3, or K5iis. With the Pentax 200mm f4 A macro you have to remove the tripod mount to put the lens on.

Probably not, I have the same issue with the FA*200mm f/4 ED Macro. Most lens collars for third party lenses are removable, I would recommend you get the lens with a collar. I personally find a lens collar an invaluable asset when it comes to stability when used on a tripod, it is also very useful for composition as it allows you to switch between horizontal and vertical framing without changing your cameras height. The lack of a tripod collar was one of the principal reasons I don't own a D-FA100mm f/2.8 WR, and got the Sigma 180mm f/3.5 APO

I have got the collar. I have had the lens a week and got the collar yesterday. I attach a picture showing it attached to my Pentax K1 Mk II. No problem with the collar hitting the camera.

Thanks for posting this. None of the reviews I've looked at reviewed the collar and I couldn't find pictures of it online.

Indeed it was not supplied, nor even mentioned, when I got the loaner for the Pentaxforums review.

After buying the tripod collar from Laowa, I did some more investigations. I found a very similar tripod collar from another Chinese company JJC (se picture). This collar is made for the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. This lens has 68 mm inner diameter, just the same as I measured for the Laowa 100 mm. It also looks very similar, so I think that is very likely that it will work just as good as the Laowa original, but I have not tested the JJC product myself.
The only difference that I found, was the original Laowa costs more than 5 times more (at least in Sweden). The JJC product looks like a copy of the original Canon tripod collar.
The tripod collar is made in plastic. You will need a mounting plate to fit on a tripod head. It would have been better with an Arca Swiss compatible foot on the tripod collar (like on the Irix 150 mm).
I also found that by mounting the tripod collar closer to the camera, it is possible to lock the Aperture ring to the A setting. This avoids the problem with accidently moving the aperture ring.

That's a good idea, but you should be careful to avoid damaging something. Maybe you just mean using the collar to add some lateral friction?

I found that black mt masking tape works wonders in these situations, like focus creep when pointing the camera downwards and so on.
