I seem to be running against the tide: I just about never use a hood. I think they are too big and cumbersome, and I doubt I have ever really had a shot messed up by flare. But, I don't shoot into the sun!

I always pop my lens cap back on as soon as I've taken a shot, so I don't worry much about lens damage.

Same as most: always the hood. For better contrast and for protection. While shooting the spare lenses in my bag will often have the hoods already mounted correctly, so I'm good when switching lenses.

The only times I don't use a lens hood is if I lost it or forgot to bring it.
Most lens hoods can be stored reversed on the lens, so it is not like they take up a lot of space.

If a lens has a hood, I use it. I don't see any downside and lots of reasons to always keep it on. I sometimes augment the hood with my hand or a hat to further reduce off-axis light.

Hood...always...

With very few exceptions, I have hoods for almost all* of my lenses and religiously use them, both to avoid errant light and for physical protection.

* Yes, even those on fixed-lens cameras. I use the original equipment and if that is unavailable, the round metal type that accept a cap on the end.

Always use a hood.
- It provides a better image as it blocks some glare
- It provides some protection to the front glass from scratches

- It provides some protection to lens from bumps

Hood almost all the time. Main reason is that the hood cuts down on glare, improving contrast. It also protects the front element from dirt and scratches.

I always use a hood, for all of the previously mentioned reasons.

Always a hood, and if I do get a lens without one, I get one ASAP. They block any stray light providing better contrast that not using them. It is essential.

I almost always use a hood.
Even for my FA 50mm f/1.4 which doesn't come with a hood, I use a rubber collapsible hood.
If not for flare avoidance, it also provides a great deal of physical protection if I drop a lens.
The only exception to this is my HD 40mm f/2.8 LTD, which I not only appreciate the even smaller size, but also I think the lens just looks cooler without the hood :P

I mostly use a lens hood.
For some of my vintage lenses I just have 1 lens hood that gets switched around for multiple lenses, when I forget the M49 to M52 step-up ring or I don't bring the lens the hood is attached to, I sometimes end up without a hood, then I use my hand to block stray light.

Just wondering what do you guys prefer to use your lens hood or forgo it and why? For me it depends on the lens but sometimes for space I leave it behind.
Hood always. Protective filter never.
