DA35 - do you use a hood?

Do you use a hood with your DA35? I have not been, but noticed recently that the front lens element is not really shaded at all. I haven't noticed any issues with it on photos, but I only use it on particular occasions.

(I use it mostly on the K-1 or film cameras, so full-frame use.)

If I remember correctly, using a hood benefits image contrast with the DA L 35, especially when side light is present.

I do not use a hood on the DA 35mm f2.4. Never had any side effects and the contrast is very good, can not compare it to biz-engineer's DA L 35 (did not know there existed such a lens) nor any other 35mm, because I do not have them. Reason I do not use a hood is I am a bit to lazy to go and buy one and without the hood I can pocket the K-01 with the 35mm attached, just fits my jacket pocket!

I do favor using a hood when available and practical because side lighting can be a factor, and even a slight degree of flair from that can reduce contrast and clarity. However, this does not always happen, and such practical reasons as these above are valid. As an alternative, one can adjust their shooting location and position to avoid possible side lighting issues. No hood came with the DA-L 18-50mm kit lens for my little K-S2, which is amazingly compact for a zoom lens, so I just use it that way.

I use a hood on my Pentax 16-85, and other lenses. It just seems to add protection to the lens and also helps limit glare effects in certain cases.

It doesn't exist. The official name of the lens we are talking about is the smc Pentax-DA 35mm F2.4 AL. "AL" stands for "Aspherical lens", a designation applied to a lens that has one or more aspherical elements.

People on this forum sometimes refer to it as the DA L 35 (either mistakenly or as a disparagement) because, like the zooms in the DA L series (Pentax DA L Zoom Lenses - Reviews and Specifications - SLR and Interchangeable Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database), it is a budget lens that comes with a plastic mount and no hood. But there are no DA L prime lenses. The practice of referring to it as the DA L should stop.

I have used it with and without. I have a metal hood that screws on the filter threads. I can't say I have noticed any serious problems without the hood but it certainly doesn't hurt.

On the topic of hoods: is there a topic which collects recommendations for hoods for lenses that don't ship with a hood, like the DA 35/2.4 or DA 50/1.8 (perhaps even distinguishing between use on a full frame or aps-c camera?), or some measurements those hoods should not exceed?

I've got a collapsible rubber hood for my fifties (but just one for all of them ) and a little metal hood for my DA 50, but I would like to equip all lenses with their own hood.

Ah, you should have one. It is an amazing lens a) for the money b) for the lovely pictures it gives you. I put it on my K-01 and was amazed what this couple achieved. Very nice colours.

I use one with my DA 35mm f2.4. It seems to help the contrast wide open a little bit.
The DA 35mm f2.8 Limited of course has its own built in hood...
