Production # question

From a post by "aslyfox" in another thread titled something like "are we really THAT rare?"
I have a beginner type question.
Is the # on the front of the lens a production #, serial #, or a combination of the 2 ? For example, on this lens it is "8560822."

It's the serial number, which would be in batches in a production run. These production runs were not necessarily always in sequence and there could be a big jump in the s/n between runs.

To be absolutely clear, it is the serial number of the lens

here is a list of those lenses which the owners have posted here at the forums

QuoteQuote:
SMC Pentax-M 50mm F2 Serial Numbers -

The smallest and slowest of the 50mm standard M lenses. This lens was manufactured over several years. The original version had a metal lens barrel like all other original M lenses. The late version had a plastic lens barrel and was manufactured from parts used in the A version. The aperture on the late version thus closes down linearly with the movement of the stop down lever like on all A lenses.
Total Serials: 176
