Moon with Two Old(er) Lenses

I took these tonight, one with a Tamron 70-300 LD and one with a Sigma 70-300 DL Macro.

I used a Tamron 1.4x T/C - here: Tamron-F 1.4X Pz-AF MC4 Lens Reviews - Miscellaneous Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

I edited both in Lightroom, and find that the Sigma slightly edges out the Tamron, although both were decent performers.

I agree there is little difference between the two, probably more difference in my ability to focus manually on a moon shot.

I had both, and decided that I got "better" results with the Sigma and sold the Tamron; but I suspect lens to lens variation may also enter the equation.

They are both good lenses for the little $$ they sell for now.

Very true. I suspect that, for many lenses in the 70/75-300 range of the early AF era (like Sigma, Tamron, Promaster, Quantaray), the lenses themselves use the same optics and much of the same formula, and differentiate only in label, shape, build.

Hardly a fair comparison.

The Tamron 60-300mm is a really great lens. No AF is not a deficiency for a "moon shot"; but for general use I'm spoiled by AF - if it were AF- I'd use it a lot more!

Ha! Ha! It's a ringer! (The 23A along with the 19AH having attained cult status of sorts for both image quality and longevity.)

Excellent!

If that lens were AF, with its capabilities and build, it would probably cost $500 (instead of the $25 I paid for it :P).

Agreed. I had a 19AH briefly, but the aperture went wonky, and I sold it to someone who (hopefully) was able to repair it.

Sorry for hijacking the thread replying to someone else's photo, but my comments on settings are relevant to any lens.

Your picture shows more color fringing than I expect from the 150-450. Being out of focus can increase fringing, so maybe it's just a case of slightly missed focus rather than a lens issue.

Shutter speed also seems slow at 1/30s. Assuming your EXIF data is correct, try ISO 400 instead of 100, and then increase shutter to 1/120.

I have to say, that is pretty impressive. I did not know that the 23A supported the 1.4X 140F. Did you mean the 2X 01F?

There is something strange going on there, it almost looks like a double exposure. with a color/angle shift. Get my 3D glasses!

Definitely the 140F! It fits nicely.
