The information given was very helpful and based on that I managed by luck to find and buy a FA 28-70 f/4 in great condition for the princely sum of £15.00 GBP from a local charity shop.

That lens is small and lightweight, which will make the substantial size of the K-1 easier for a walk around camera. However, as the K-1's excellent build quality features WR (weather resistant) sealing, that feature is not actively there unless the lens used also features WR in its build quality. Something to keep in mind.
