I voted 28-40.
From my current line up it would have to be DA40ltd. I love that lens, I just wish it was f2 (I know there is FA43 but I don't think I'll be able to justify it when I already have 40). I would like to try good (very good) 28-31 lens. Idealy FA31ltd but I don't think I'll ever have the finances for that

Well, if it were the last lens you'd ever buy, I suppose you could splurge a little.

I love it how in a completely hypothetical poll, some people still can't bear to bring only one lens!

...I'll get back to you.

Hey, I only picked 1 lens . . . for each of the 7 bodies.

I was amused by the rows of slot machines at Las Vegas airport (this was inside the departure lounge, obviously still trying to clean you out before letting you get away ).

No need for ultra wide, quite simple to stitch two DA21 shots together for this:
(hope it shows well on your screen, on mine it gets auto resized to some odd pixel numbers making lines quite zaggy!)

Nope! Sorry! Can't do it. Interchangable lenses is one of the factors that make DSLRs so useful. You want to lock into one lens you might as well just buy a P&S.

Now if you'd asked "if you could only have one ZOOM lens," then my answer would have been "the BIGMA... 50-500mm of PURE POWER!!!"

I'd probably choose the 31mm/1.8 if I could afford it.
I don't quite love the 28mm/2.8 A but it is a very flexible focal length and I find I use it a lot.

The point of an SLR is the large sensor and the large, accurate viewfinder that previews at max aperture, allowing you to let your mind follow the focus point continuously.

Using only one lens does not kill the usefulness of interchangeability - you still get to pick which lens it's going to be, and you get to carry that lens to your next camera when you upgrade.

Cheers

My single camera & single lens kit..

Pentax 67II body

Non-metered Pentaprism 67II finder

SMC 67 75mm f2.8 AL wide angle lens (37.5mm equivalent in 35mm)..

Pentax Digital Spot Meter..

Attach a Kirk BL-67II L-bracket to the body..

Modify a Mamiya Press Type 3 Left Grip with attached cable release so that it has an Arca-Swiss style screw-knob Q.R. tripod plate fixed to the shaft that would allow a quick on-off of the grip to the Kirk L-bracket..

Gitzo G-1564L aluminum monopod with Really Right Stuff MH-1 Pro monopod head..

Gitzo GT3541 XLS carbon fiber tripod with Really Right Stuff BH-55 Pro ball head..

Linhof 21" Heavy-Duty cable release

The above outfit would be able to handle 75% of the situations that might arise for me..Of course, I'd also really want to add the 35mm f4.5 fisheye lens, the 45mm f4.0 ultra wide angle lens, the 55mm f4.0 wide angle lens, the 105mm f2.4 normal lens, the Takumar 150mm f2.5 short telephoto lens, the 200mm f4.0 short telephoto lens, the M* 300mm f4.0 ED (IF) telephoto lens, the M* 400mm f4.0 ED (IF) telephoto lens, the Takumar 600mm f4.0 super telephoto lens, and the SMC 67 1.4x & 2x rear converters..Then I'd be truly set!!..

But just one lens??..Definitely the 75mm f2.8 wide angle..The huge negative would allow cropping to slightly make up for some of a single lens's limitations..

I'd buy more than one camera, each with a different focal length.

FA31 for me. Stays on the camera most of the time anyway. A very natural and versatile angle of view.

And since it's FF, I can throw it on a 35mm body for wide angle work. Gotta love a loophole

I still am not sure what "on crop" means, but I know the wide end meets my needs best for general shooting. 20-24mm on APS-C, 28-35mm on 35mm film.

Steve

(On the other hand, my best shots this year have been at 85mm, 50mm, and 150+mm on APS-C...darn you pingflood, darn you to heck!...)

By "on crop" I meant when used on an APS-C sensor camera; e.g. 18mm "on crop" would be in the same category as say 28mm "full frame". Hope that makes sense.

I guess it makes sense, though I was taught that 28mm means 28/1000 of a meter. Focal length is focal length regardless of the detector/film format. A 28mm lens used with APS-C is the same as a 28mm for any other size media.

For the purposes of this poll, it probably would have been more useful to skip the focal lengths and categorize the lenses according to class (ultra-wide, wide, normal, short tele, medium tele, etc.).
