Almost every lens is good for something. Even my much maligned (by me) Sigma 70-300 was indistinguishable from my DA* 60-250 from 80mm to 160mm. If you bought it as an 80mm to 160mm lens, it was a great purchase. It's only if you tried to use it for what it wasn't the best at, you had issues. If the strength of a lens is matched to the way you shoot, you can save serious money, just by knowing when to use it as well. There are many ways to avoid paying the big bucks for seriously good performance.
