Any experiences with new DA L 18-55?

.

Just bought a K2000 + 18-55 DA L for $385.

Anyone use this lens yet and can compare it to the original 18-55?

Nope, just won a prodigital2000 auction: Further ramblings on this.

I'm wondering if I should sell the 18-55 II along with my K100DS...

I'd sell the L. The I/II has a metal mount versus the L's plastic mount.
Optically, I hear that they're the same but I can't tell you based on the samples I've seen.

Wait - how many versions of the 18-55 are there? I thought there were only two versions, and the "L" is the same as the 18-55 II? Not true?

You are right on both counts - there are two 18-55mm optical designs, and the DAL lens is the second (II) design in a lighter barrel with a plastic lensmount and w/o QS focusing and a focusing distance scale. Pentax used plastic lens mounts on the last of their FA consumer zooms in the film days and AFAIK they held up pretty well as long as one didn't put a lot of stress on the lens.

I just received my K-m w/kit lens today from Prodigital2000 and it's sitting beside me as I write. It feels much lighter and more compact than my K20D with DA17-70. I paid a little more than you ($397.44 inc. s/h) but it's a great deal just the same. I actually don't expect to use the kit lens much, as I want to use my Limiteds on this body as a compact travel kit.

Regards, Jim

First light with the DAL 18-55

I had a few minutes outside to check out my K-m with the DAL 18-55 kit lens today. I don't have access to the original DA18-55 I or II so I can't compare it to one of them - sorry.

My standard test shots (mailbox/street at 100 meters and brick wall at 2-5 meters) show that this kit lens is a lot poorer than my DA16-45 when viewed at 100%. It's soft in the center wide open, with even weaker corners. My copy appears to be somewhat decentered as well - the upper right side never cleans up completely at any aperture. Wide open performance at 18mm and 35mm is poorer than at 50mm. Stopping down one stop improves the centers quite a bit but the corners continue to lag even a couple of stops down.

Snapshot size images don't look too bad so I guess that this is what the lens was designed for. I'd avoid shooting it wide open, though. As for myself, I don't expect to get much use out of it - I have several good short-medium zooms and the Limited primes, all of which need the exercise!

Thanks, Jim. You should post some shots taken with the K-M and the limiteds!

Yes, I compared my I version to my daughters II to see if I needed to think about upgrading. Well I could not see any discernible differences shooting with the same settings at the same views so I'm keeping what I have.

Had a chance to take a few snapshots after my K-M arrived today - The kit 18-55 L
doesn't seem too bad... I plan to use the 43ltd, F 50 1.7 and Taks/M's/K's mostly on
the K-M, but I'll post kit lens shots in here if when I use it.
