Well,
now if/when you sell that damaged lens you can truthfully say: "has no effect on images" ! Who would have thought ?

No effect? Unlikely. There will still probably be situations in certain lighting conditions where I have to properly work around it. But for most shots I agree.

What do you do when you crack the rear element on your lens?
You sell it on Ebay! (The buyer must be a brave person.)

My first thought was that I've got some superglue kind of stuff that's really thin, made to seep into and repair cracks in glass. I fixed my computerette ("smart phone" without a SIM) using that stuff.
The fumes from that type of glue will probably damage the coatings. It is not good around lenses. The plastic parts might also become fragile.

As for how it cracked? I’d guess thermal shock. But that’s just a guess.

I saw that lens on ebay and almost clicked buy button to keep it as a part resource in case my lens needs repair in the future Congratulations! Usually we believe marks on the front will not impact image but the issues on rear element might. This lens definitely still makes good image! As a portrait lens, the edge is not that important, if there is any impact. Maybe just to avoid strong backlight?

The original image of the lens is gone. @zombiearmy could you add a new one?

I can't seem to edit the original post but this is a picture of my own of the rear damage.

Thank you. I was calling this out in another thread and without that picture the story isn't as compelling!

THAT is truly amazing! I mean, amazing that the images don't seem to be affected. I never would have thought . . . . . .

The damage off to the side yes but the crack goes right through the middle and never shows up directly in pictures.

It does however show up in bokeh and affect light when shooting bright sources. Of course that can be used artistically.
