Yes, your sample images above render very well.

Those two environmental portraits are perfect examples of where I think this lens will really shine.
I don't think 21mm would be classed by most people as "portrait" on FF, but I agree.

I’m very satisfied with this lens. Like it’s sibling, the 31, it’s perfect for everyday life. I love the rendering, the pop and the bokeh. Just a couple of shots yet. Days are short this time of year and I forgot to set auto ISO in the outdoor shot of my doughter, she moved, but still it pops!
Images sure do look nice! Are you from one of the Nordic countries?

Then "most people" suffer from a lack of imagination

I consider a "figure in a landscape" to still be a portrait, especially when the angle of view of the lens allows the photographer to get in nice and close while maintaining the ambience.

Environmental portraits are always with wide lenses, Paul. The point is that the workplace or home or whatever is as important to the story telling as the person, the environment helps define who they are.

Here's an example from our Avalon Air Show ... 23mm on the FA20-35, full frame.

The close up thing is so strange. The dfa21 close up photos look stunning but it's such a niche feature of a wide angle lens. It's like its made for lens nerds who mainly photograph to see lens behaviour. I'm not dissing it but it's certainly an unusual thing to optimise a lens for.
Here's my niche: objects in museum cases, where the isolation of the subject even from the case it's in could be beneficial.

I believe they're Airbus Tigers with Hellfires. We have some Blackhawks, too.

With the portrait sample above and some of the recent mid distance examples of people photography from japan. It's beginning to be clear that the lens does very well at mid distance as well as close up. I can see a lot of use cases for distances where perspective isn't quite so dramatic as close up. Say 70cm upwards.

Very nice use of this unusual FOV!

I’m looking forward to your review. I haven’t ordered the lens, and I’m not entering the raffle for it. I don’t really need something like this but I’m tempted. If it looks completely awesome I may get it anyway…
"need" and "want" are so close in our hearts!

It pops indeed! Great work there.

It gives just that bit wider perspective to the DFA 24-70, but in comparing the images that come out between the two lenses, they really are cut from the same pixie-dust cloth.
Barely any adjustments needed in PP:

Nice contrast and colors in what seems a difficult lighting situation!
