It is incredibly difficult to affect photo quality. The most devastating damage a lens can get is separation or a lot of cleaning marks.

There was a youtube demonstration by Tony Northrup where he hammered the front lens of a 50mm lens with a crayfish claw, until it was totally peppered with chips. Before and after images showed no difference in quality - which was certainly surprising. After 4 years use my HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR Lens has one spec of dust on the inside of the front lens (due to the zoom action), which has no effect at all on the excellent image quality from this lens.
Unfortunately I can't offhand find the Northrup video link, but it was in a video on photographic misconceptions.

In many descriptions for used lenses I have found "a small amount of dust, will not affect photo quality." Should this be believed?
Yes. You should see how much dust is on my DFA* 85/1.4, but it's as sharp now as when I unboxed it.
