Lens suggestions

OK, I finally bit the bullet and got the K3-III. I've been shooting with the K1 in various iterations for a while now and am totally out-of-date on aspc lenses for Pentax. What I'm looking for is an ultra zoom similar to the K1's 15-30 ultra wide zoom. Is there anything out there that is equivalent? I haven't been here for a while, I decided to take a break from photography for a while and I'm obviously back to shooting, but I would like a new ultra wide zoom don't need a Pentax branded lens but I would like something that has comparable image resolution/and decent close focus ability.

You may want to follow this thread on the Pentax DA 12-24mm and the Pentax DA* 11-18mm lenses. The former is one which I've owned a long time and has received praise from various users over the years. The later is the newest and greatest (and more expensive and heavy).

I'm following along too, mostly to see whether I should take the dive and spend that large sum for the similar, newer WA lens.

Edit: Jinx! it appears we posted at just the same time!

To be clear, The 11-18 is also a non fisheye lens. The 10-17 is the Pentax DA fisheye lens.

And your point in quoting my post? Where did you read in my post I state the 11-18 lens wasn't or anything about it, the 10-17mm or any Pentax lens. I do believe my post was regarding the Sigma 10-20mm only.

I believe he was clarifying for the OP who is not as familiar with Pentax lenses as you and most of us here are. I can see where your post could mistakenly be taken by him as suggesting some of the other lenses mentioned were fisheye's. Of course we all know better.

It is easy to misread what you said by someone not familiar with the Pentax lenses. I only wanted to clarify this to anyone else reading this.

I've had one of these for several years and it's always had a certain attraction. Now, this isn't a lens to stick on the camera every day but when you have one of "those" scenes I quite like how it renders the blues and greens. For wide shots, excellent, not so good for closer shots...better choices in the arsenal. Ideally, given my evolution of equipment, for doing scenery, it would be the K-1 with the 15-30 (currently, using every opportunity to exercise and explore the K-3 III). There is probably no quality comparison between the 10-20 or the DFA 15-30 worth debating. With the 15-30, on the K-1 secured to a tripod and you've got a serious contender. Whack the 10-20 (it won't fit the K-1) on the K-3 III for snap-shot adventures and I think it works: BTW, the 15-30 is "weighty", tripod use comes naturally...not so much with the 10-20 Sigma.

The way you phrased your comment could easily suggest that the 11-18 and 12-24 might be considered a fish-eye lens. In this light I think you reaction to quoting your post is a bit harsh and does not comply wiith "the friendly people here on this forum". And quoting on a forum is always permitted, whether it is for the right or wrong reasons, that is essentially what a forum is for. After all, we are here to help each other. Now that the Sigma is mentioned it is also good to indicate that a number of Pentax brand specific possibilities with a modern lens/camera combination are not possible with third party lenses.

I am jumping into this thread since I am also looking for a rectilinear wide angle zoom to go along with my DA 16-85 on my K-3. I have the SMC DA 15 Limited but would like a wider zoom too. Of all of the lenses noted in this thread only the 11-18 DA* is available new. The Sigma 10-20 or the DA 12-24 I would need to find used and the DFA 15-30 is not under consideration. There is lots of good information here and certainly I am looking for more until I find what I want to buy.
