I don't know what switching to live view did but your tip was good.
Such mysteries may be lost in the clouds. It's like your new camera and lens hiccuped, and then had to be burped. Now all right!

Yes it does.
Maybe live view focusing resetted focusing group in some way?
Don't know.
But I tested the lens and it works.
Focus is fast, correct and decisive, with the exception of wide end when using outer AF points on a small target.
So moral of the story is - try live view before sending in RMA.

Didn't work so good after all.:P
While the lens did start to focus correctly it seems it works from focal around 25mm and up.
On wide end only the central points are accurate.
I checked it on KP and it's more or less the same. Also checked with older DA*16-50 and it focuses without any problems.
So I'm sending it to repair service after all.:P

Sorry the lens did not work out for you! Might be a production glitch in the first batches of this new lens. However, anything made, no matter with the greatest care, can turn out defective.

Although he no longer participates in these forums, @BigRed - a representative from Ricoh Imaging USA - still logs in from time-to-time. Hopefully he will see this and the other thread, here:

Can someone check the accuracy/difference of all AF points in AF-S Select - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com

Good to hear this. Are you going to try another one?

Paying a lot for a lens is no guarantee of perfect functioning, regardless of the brand. The lens is defective - send it back for repair or exchange.

When it nailed the focus the image quality was outstanding, also PLM motor is VERY fast.
That being said - it is big and heavy, something that made me sell Sigma Art 18-35.
So I guess the answer is sure, I think I will, but not at current price, and I don't feel any pressure to buy it again quickly.

Ah, ha! Seems like an early-batch bug.

Hi,
do you have any record of the serial number of the defective copy? Serial number of the ... charm one?
Thanks
Danilo

Sure. The bad one was 3300355 and the good one is 3301437.
I've also had one from Amazon Warehouse Deal but it was straight up broken-literally some loose parts flying inside .

Interesting. I wander how many other camera/lens combos could be improved this way?

It didn't really improve after all, It was just inconsistent, I've returned that lens and bought a new one.
