Here's a test from the Takumar 100mm. I think it wins. Opinions?
Yes, IMHO it definitely wins. No contest.

I like this shot.
Eyes are sharp and the skin is smooth with soft shadowing defining the shape of the face.
This is what a portrait is all about and why we all like the 50mm lens for this type of picture.
If you add more light and close the aperture down to say f8, you will see pimples, freckles etc which a pro will work hard to avoid.
Good work.
eyes are definitely not razor sharp. Either focus is slightly off or he/she needs to step it down...

They are both slightly back focussed, double check with a little test.

Thanks for everyone's input. It seems that the general consensus is that I missed the focus, and my 50mm F2 should have no issues getting a good shot. I'll have to play around some more next week, and see what I can come up with.

eccs19, I took the liberty of d/ling your first pic and running it through Lightroom. I bumped up the clarity slider, added a touch of contrast, toned down the left hand side of the child's face (camera right) and maybe added a bit to much sharpening but I wanted to show the effect. Also upon export standard screen sharpening was applied.

Now, in Lightroom 2.1 I could have applied these adjustments to just his face using adjustment brushes and left the background alone but I don't have my lappy booted up and the adjustment brushes run painfully slow on my desktop.

+1 on that. That's crazy. I can't believe how much of an improvement that made.
