If your photos lack punch, might it be technique? As for comparisons to the legacy lenses, that might be a matter of apples vs. oranges (rendering goals of that time vs. rendering goals for now).

(...am thinking this matter has been discussed before...deja vu?...)

Generally speaking, my experience is that the amount of detail of the 31/43/77 is in another league, you can almost feel the "material" of your subject.

My pics with the 21/2.4 lack that sort of "punch".
Somewhat?

Take time to carefully calibrate the lens. Being slightly out of focus does give you that impression of lacking "punch".

But you've not seen many full res images. Most ff photos look good scaled down to web size including old fa and a 20mm lenses. The price ofta the dfa21 means it hade to be a lot better than the a20.

From what I've seen it is much better but I dont own the lens.
That is a valid point.

Are you talking about the HD D FA 21mm ?

There is no HD FA 21 mm that I know of

Of course, with limited exceptions, the design of the FA limiteds have not changed since they were developed for Pentax SLR camera bodies
Isn't the dfa 21mm limited new from the ground up? Not that I could compare as I don't have any old from the ground up fa limiteds either

It is completely new. I think Alan's point was, the rest of the (D) FA Limited lenses haven't changed (aside from the recent move to HD coatings, of course)...

The new D-FA 21mm LTD 2.4 is a completely new design. It is designed in the spirit of the original FA Ltd lenses in that it will retain a degree of aberration. See here.....D FA Limited | PENTAX Limited Lens Special Site | RICOH IMAGING

It is not a macro lens and anyone expecting such performance from it has bought the wrong lens.

The FA Limiteds have now new HD Coatings and the shape of the aperture blades changed

Always interesting to read a diverging opinion... All reports so far have been enthusiastic! Thanks for helping lowering the level of lust for those of us who can't afford it!

I spent the morning in the garden with the 21, and the afternoon with the 31, so my technique should be not a variable of the equation.

Will post soon some OOC Jpegs crops, so we rule out post processing interventions.

I forgot about the rounded aperture blades. Less appealing for fans of diffraction stars... Can't say I've ever experienced FOMO with my own HD DA Limiteds, but I know it's a big deal for some...

Well, Gian, we await your images. What I'd say here is that I would expect this lens to be somewhat different than the other limiteds---both because of its FL but also because the original ones go back to the turn of the century. Not sure we've seen many image examples from the new HD versions. So, Its pixie dust might have its own character.

The sunstars on the fa 31 and fa 43 and fa 77 aren’t the amazing things you get from the da 15.

Thanks for posting these, Gian. Can you post EXIF info, or share your settings with us? The exposure looks quite different... I'd say the D FA21 Ltd image is exposed about +1EV higher than the FA31 Ltd image. Plus, the lighting conditions seem very different.
