Sigma 70-200 HSM / General Question

I have the new Sigma and it is a big beast.

My question is about the hood.

If I choose to work without the hood, what am I giving up in IQ and under what conditions?

Is the hood mostly to fight flare or does it add to IQ across the board in all conditions.

Hoods only protect against flare. And you will only get flare in certain (usually extreme) lighting situations. There is no other IQ benefit.

Some, including myself, leave the hood on to protect the front element from bumps and scratches.

Bigben hit the nail on the head here. If you're going to use your lens without the hood, do yourself a favor and go buy a decent UV or 1B filter. Better to scratch a $40 filter than the front element of your $700 lens.
