Both - depending on the style of shoot.
When I need to be able to change FL quickly to get the shot - weddings, moving kids, catwalkers, etc. - it's most definitely a zoom.
When the subject is more stationary, it's a prime for me.

My most favoured lenses are primes, but my most versatile and used lenses are zooms.

I'm with Ash on this one... I love shooting primes but there's something to be said for the versatility of a good zoom lens. When traveling I generally slap the 24-105 on my FF body and use that.

I prefer and use primes much more often, but if the event/shot calls for it I'm not opposed to using a zoom.

in my medium format, and Large format 4X5 and 8X10 field work I always used primes. and that doesn't change much when i'm shooting digital, the K-7 is capable of matching 645 format for resolution with a semi-decent lens. The K-7 is capable of BEATING 67 format with an above average optic...hence why I use primes especially the FA limiteds.

though mind you I have had alot of successfull images made with a sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX APO - but telephoto lenses are somewhat simpler to make in comparison to ultra wide angle super-zooms.

the day they make a zoom lens for 4X5 cameras then, we will know things have gone horribly wrong..

Can I say both?

I own two zooms, 17-70 and 100-300, and they are always with me. So is my 50/f1,7. Then I can bring my 50 macro, 28/f2,8 or 150/f3,5 depending on what I plan on shooting.

Basically I use the primes when I need speed or compactness, and zooms for general work and convenience.

I couldn't say if I get more keepers with either. I believe lenses are just tools, select the one you think will get the job done.

yeah, manual primes are what i mainly use. in fact, even when i have a zoom on the camera, i forget to use the zoom and find myself walking closer or retreating to frame the shot, as i would with the fixed focal length. whoops.

I think I only have 2 zooms which even fit my present system, and I haven't the faintest idea how many primes I have. Although I usually only carry 2 or 3 with me, occasionally a 35mm f2. Plus always a 55mm f1.8, and although it's killing my already bad back a 200mm f2.8
Oddly enough those 2 lenses are perfect for 80% of my shooting these days.

I own two zooms (the awesome Tammy 17-50 and the DA 55-300) but ever since getting my first prime (f50/1.4) and Tammy going in for repairs I got addicted to primes. Now, my zooms are always on the shelf and I carry a backpack full of primes :-)
