4 zooms+3 Primes + 1 Body = .....

So, I saw Randy's (slipchuck) post on someone doing a test on different lenses or what not, and it's been in my mind for quite some time. anyway, had a quick talk with Adam on a rudimentary set up, and I tossed together something very very quick, and uncontrolled. I need to redo the test shoot and take more time with the set up and stuff, but at least this gives out an idea on how each lens is on the same subject.

the set up.

Body = K10D
Settings:
1/30s f/8
zooms set @ 50mm (DA set at 45)
flash WB (using 540-FGZ in PTTL and A-Mode for the Tak and M50)
body was on tripod

Subject = Box of Crayons

the players

Zooms=

Pentax SMC-F 35-70 f/3.5-4.5

Pentax SMC-F 35-80 f/4-5.6

Pentax DA 18-55 DA f/3.5-4.5

Sigma 28-80 AL f3.5-5.6

up next the primes

primes

Pentax M50 f/1.7

Sigma 28mm EX DG f/1.7

Super Takumar 135mm f/3.5

yes, the tests are very very uncontrolled. too many discrepancies. i'll try to do some other stuff later on, i have to plan it out instead of just tossing it together in 10 minutes, then doing the shoot. my cropping was also bad.

anyway...enjoy, discuss, etc, etc...

Haha, I thought it was a nice wide/macro of your lens collection as opposed to tests. Yea I'm going through LBA withdrawal.

yea that happens to me too, although not as drastic. Slight metering changes as I using different lenses of the same focal length. I think the coatings has some effect on it.

yeah, i might do ranges in terms of shutter speed.
i need to keep something constant tho.

in any case, the next partaking will be of a bigger magnitude.

and yeah..I have a shot of most of my gear. i'll post that in FB later on. LoL

I believe this is why outside of photography they refer to a 'T-stop' which actually refers to the amount of light getting through, as opposed to the 'F-stop' which only refers to the physical attributes of the lens.
I have certainly noticed that lens coatings make a huge difference in exposure times. My (non-SMC-coated) Super-Takumar 35/2 lets in less light than my (SMC-coated) Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 35/2 does. The only way to account for it in tests like this is to watch the histogram and try to get it roughly in the middle.

Hi JoN

thank you very much for posting this. it is a great start!

I was wondering if it would be possible if you do it again to hide which lens is which and just give us a list of the lenses and let people guess which matches with which

I bet there would be a lot of surprises at the choices people make

thanks again JoN

cheers

randy
