Jupiter 9 mount recognition - M39 or M42?

I've found a listing for a Jupiter 9 but I can't tell if the lens is M42 or M39. Is anyone able to tell from the pictures attached? I've asked the seller but they don't know which mount it is. Looking for an affordable portrait lens for my Spotmatic II, which may not end up being this as they can get expensive but figure it's worth a bid. Thanks!

That has a mount adapter on it - hence why it's a (Canon EF?) bayonet fitting rather than threads you can see. Could the seller unscrew that adapter and measure the diameter?

It looks like a later style Jupiter-9 from this angle, suggesting it's most likely an M42 mount under that adapter, but it could be either and it's difficult to tell without measuring.

thank you, that's so helpful! i'll ask the seller to measure it and hopefully we can get somewhere.

The seller measured the diameter and said it's 4cm - am I correct in thinking this is a M42 mount?

4cm is closer to 3.9cm than 4.2cm. Still not close enough to make a call either way.

Hmmm... That's kind of inconclusive

I've just measured the mounts on both of my older-style Jupiter-9 lenses with electronic calipers. The M39 version measures 38.79mm at the threads, while the M42 version measures 41.94mm.

My best guess is that it's an M39 mount, but it's impossible to be absolutely certain. If you're after M42 (and that would be your best choice if mounting on a K-mount SLR or DSLR, as the flange focal distance is the same), I'd pass on this one...

I really appreciate all of your help, and for you measuring your lenses to check! From your own measurements it does indeed seem inconclusive and not worth the risk of landing an M39 instead of what I want, so I'll pass on bidding. Thanks again!

You're very welcome Good luck with finding a nice portrait lens, and perhaps let us know what you end up buying?

Given the plethora of mounts supported by different J-9 models, it may be that the lens is is native bayonet mount. Nah...I suspect something, perhaps a Frankenlens based on the Automat version.

I'm aware of versions in native L39, M39, M42 and Kiev / Contax RF mounts... also - possibly - swappable / adaptable mounts like the T-mount system, usually with an "A" suffix (e.g. Jupiter-9A - though I've not actually seen one); but I'm not aware of a native Canon EF version...

If you're looking for an affordable portrait lens in M42, there are about a bazillion 135mm lenses out there in M42...

I also have the 120mm f2.8, which is a cool lens, but no longer super cheap.

If the lens is a screw-fit SLR lens and not an r/f or Contax/Kiev fit, for use as a portrait lens either 39mm (+ 39-42mm adaptor) or 42mm will be fine … you'll not be worrying about slight infinity focus issues caused by flange distance differences at portrait distances
It's difficult to be 100% sure, but the bayonet mount in the pictures looks very much like a Canon EF fit … the Canon lens cap might be a clue!
Given the unlikely event of a 39mm-EF adaptor, it's probably M42-EF.
I'd like to see a side-on and front view of the lens to be totally sure.
The Jupiter 9 from my Russian r/f cameras was one of the reasons I bought a (non-Pentax) mirrorless body … it's a superb lens!
Yes, I have some of the "bazillion" 135mm lenses, also a 100mm f/2.8 and an 85mm soft-focus … the Jupiter 9 still has it's place in the bag
If the "price was right" I'd probably grab it

Well the Jupiter 8 is an M39 because I have one fitted to my Zorki 4K. If that helps...
