Sigma 18-125

Does anyone have a Sigma 18-125mm lens. It's currently $305 at Adorama and I am looking hard at getting one. I realize the Optical Stabilization will not work with my K10 but what I really want to know is the performance of the HSM. Does it work well with the K10?

I emailed Sigma and heard back today. No HSM in the Pentax mount.

Hi Mark,
I have the 18-125, it was the kit lens on my *ist DS. I have taken countless photos with this lens over the years and it is a great travel lens with a useful focal range.

However.

My wife has used it a lot recently on the K200 and I have put it it on the K20 occasionally. We have both come to the conclusion that the 18-125 is just a little soft on either of these cameras and while it is still a useable lens, it just starts to let you down when you enlarge the shots.

We have recently added the pentax 17-70 and early (but limited) usage indicates that this lens is a whole lot sharper...as it should be given the price difference.

So while I am not going to knock the 18-125, I do think there are better options out there.

Cheers

Mark, I have a copy of the first version of this lens also. I recently shot a "brick wall" comparison of it with my DA 17-70 on my K-m body, and I must say that the 18-125 DC surprised me, as it performed at least as well if not slightly better than the DA 17-70. Sharpness and contrast were excellent. I did notice a slight tendency to underexpose, but this was not an issue IMO. I included my DAL 18-55 in the comparison and the Sigma just blew it away.

For some reason this lens doesn't get much respect, but I'll be sure to use mine more often!

Regards, Jim
