anyone had any experience with one of these?

New 85mm f1.4 Lens for Pentax K10D K20D K100D K200D - eBay Digital Camera Lenses, Lenses, Photographic Accessories, Cameras. (end time 25-Dec-08 22:23:35 AEDST)

Seems to be the same as a Samyang but with no brand. Also this one is cheaper in Australia than the Samyang Branded ones on ebay.com

They are also called Polar, and are apparently a supplier for Vivitar. I've been tossing around the idea of trying one of these, but with Christmas so close and already having an 85, I've resisted the urge. Gooshin did you order one of these babies?

Here is a Korean distributor page with links to pics and a lower price. Note, this is an 'A' lens and is manual focus! Note sure the quality of the build or feel.

?????? [POLAR 85mm 1.4 / PENTAX-A ?]

They also had a 28/2.8 "macro" (more like semi close focus if the 1:6 on the side is right)

?????? [28mm 1:2.8 / POLAR PENTAX ?]

Anyway, I'd be curious to hear some field reports - let the LBA begin!

K.

I've kind of noticed that 75s and 85s seem rather scarce/expensive for Pentax: it's probably not going to be an immediate concern for me as I'll probably be sticking with Canon for most of the film work, but eventually, who knows.

Perfect for those portrait shots of... camels, apparently.

Actually, the sample images look rubbish.

Those images sure don't help that lenses cause. They all look really soft, very flat and over exposed. Less the one of the camel eating off of the ground, I see nothing that tops what I have or is available elsewhere. I think I'll be passing on this one for sure. I'd rather put my $$ into something a bit more proven like a Pentax DA70LTD or FA77LTD.

Camel portraiture, take it seriously. Many photographers dedicate their whole kit for this. For them, this lens is a miracle. Its so versatile, they can also extend their work into Ibex and even Giraffe. Clearly, these shots are amazing.

FWIW, I see most of those pics are badly overexposed and on an unknown body since the same shots appear for all mounts. It was some guy at the shop that took these, I doubt its official promo. I'd hold out hope that something good could be done with it. If it turns out to be half decent, maybe it'll force other manual lens makers to consider competition, which makes us all happy in the end.

For the giraffe I prefer something considerably longer, with a big neck. As for the ibex, I'm not sure f/1.4 is fast enough. Those suckers can really run!
