Looking for an affordable zoom (~200mm) for auto-racing work...

Need some advice on a lens for automotive photography. I've got a K10D and I've been looking at the DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 and the F Zoom 1:4-5.6 70-210mm.

Anyone have any experience with these in an automotive/racing environment? Or have any suggestions on what to get?

I've been researching, but I'm still not sure which one would be best. From what I gather, the autofocus might be a bit problematic on the F 70-210, especially taking pics at race. I have read that optically it is very good, however, and that is important to me as well, obviously.

Anyone have any advice?

The 55-300 is supposed to be better in pretty much all respects than the 50-200, but whether it is *enough* better to be worth the difference in price is something you'll have to decide for yourself after looking at the various samples that have been posted in the forums (here and at dpreview).

Then there are more expensive and even better zooms too, of course.

$300-350 is all I want to spend right now. I about to graduate from college, so I'm just looking for something to get out and start covering some events.

I forgot about the 55-300mm. I actually tried out one of those at Ritz one time. I may lean that direction then.

Any other recommendations?

I used the Tamron 70-300 macro at the track this summer and was very pleased with the results irrespective of the low price of this lens (approx 130 shipped in the US). Now, this lens does have some purple fringe issues on areas w/ high contast (ie: white car w/ black letters), but nothing that a little post production couldn't handle...

The link below is my flickr set for my day at the track, mostly w/ the 70-300...

If that is your price range, I'd go with the DA 55-300mm.

Vagrant, Those are some nice action racing shots!

I've been using F70-210 for a year or so, not for a autoracing though, just as a general zoom lens. No problem with focusing and optical quality. The lens is noisy and ugly, but takes great pictures. I would say it is focusing fast on K10D. One of my favorite lenses. I got it from a member here on pentaxforums for $200

Went with the DA 55-300mm. Thanks for the advice guys! Hopefully this will give me the range for some killer shots at the next event!
