My Vintage Pentax Lenses that I use regularly

I'm back............Well it's been about 5 years since I've posted on a regular basis but this forum seems more like home to me than any other place I've visited

My current stable of Pentax legacy Glass consists of the following:

Pentax M 50mm F1.4

Pentax A 100mm F4 Macro

Pentax A 400mm F5.6

Tokina AT SD 100-400mm F4 ( I count this since it has a Pentax mount)

The 50mm 1.4 is used for portraiture shots and most everyday common photographs. I use this lens on both my Fuji X-H1 and Pentax Program Plus SLR Film camera.

The 100mm F4 Macro is used for flower and insect shots

The A 400mm F5.6 is used mostly for birding

The Tokina 100-300mm F4 is used for rail fanning and outdoor sporting events

I'm more than happy to provide you with what I paid for each one of these lenses but suffice to say ALL of them together were less than $500 total!

Am I correct that these lenses are M-42 mount? Which adapter do you use?

Your 2nd and 4th photos are outstanding. Thank you for sharing these, as well as your experience with these oldies but goodies lenses.

I still use one of the first lenses I ever bought: my Vivitar Series 1 28-90 zoom (“The Stovepipe”). I love it for portraits. I originally bought it for shooting basketball games from the floor.

No, they are all K-mount. I use K&F Concept $29 dollar adapter I purchased on Amazon.

Let's see if I have a better photo with the Pentax A 400mm F5.6....I really love using this lens. The focus is as smooth as butter.

Where's that old guy @Normhead been hiding out? I'd like to know what he thinks of this old glass

Are you shooting exclusively with the old glass?
I have a handfull of F -FA lenses but I almost always go for the older MF stuff. Largely because successful auto focus changes your technique somewhat and I would rather not switch from one to the other. The exception being the FA 400 where there is just too much advantage to be had from AF.

My Pentax legacies are the A50/1.4 + 200/4, and M85/2 + 135/3.5. I also have a loose copy of the A28/2.8, VG- condition at best. All the others are in EX or better condition.

I also have my golden oldie, the Rikenon XR 70-150/4. I've looked into that many Tokina a time or two, but my 300+ tele needs are rare. A Hanimar 400/6.3 could be pressed into service, assuming I know where it is!

The color in the second bird photo, of your two bird post, is stunning. Everything about that photo is made better by the way that subtle pinkish tone is used.

Yes. I sold all of my modern Pentax lenses 5 years ago when I switched to a Fuji system. My only regret is selling the Pentax F*300 as it was the sharpest long lens I’ve ever owned.

I’m thinking of getting the 28 F2.8 in the Pentax A version. The Tokina zoom lens I have is probably their sharpest long lens ever made.

Thank you. That was shot using the Fuji X-H1 using Capture One editing software.

My SMC Pentax collection consists of the following
  • M 20mm f/4
  • A 24mm f/2.8
  • M 28mm f/2.8
  • K 50mm f/1.2
  • M 50mm f/1.4
  • M 50mm f/1.7
  • M 50mm f/2
  • A 50mm f/2.8 macro
  • M 100mm f/2.8
  • K 135mm f/3.5
  • K 135mm f/2.5
  • M 200mm f/4
  • K 200mm f/2.5
  • A 400mm f/5.6

As can be seen there is room for 15mm, 35mm, 85mm and 300mm primes in the stable. I do have some of those, but not in SMC Pentax. Maybe one day, no rush. For now, the 35mm spot is occupied by a vintage Takumar 35mm f/2.3 - lovely, but getting too valuable to take out of the house. I also have a Rokinon 8mm fisheye and 85mm f/1.4 that serves me well. In the 300mm corner I only have a tired old Tamron 300mm f/5.6.

What lens or lenses in your current stable of vintage glass really stand out for you? I’m interested in adding to my small collection.
Thanks!

Of the above, my favorite is the SMC Pentax 50mm f/1.2. I only use it on my Samsung NX1 because manual focusing with an OVF is too much of a challenge.

The 50mm f/1.4 is quite good as well, and a lot more budget friendly. The f/1.2 is fairly rare and the prices are rising,

For street photography, the 20mm and 28mm work well. Once again, the 28mm is easier to get and way less expensive.

There's a HUGE difference in price between the Pentax 20mm and 28mm lens. Other than focal length would you recommend the 28mm F2.8 as a good walk around lens? I would be using it on my mirrorless system the Fuji X-H1 that uses an EVF which allows easy manual focus. I have a PerGear 25mm lens that I purchased for the Fuji X system. It's OK but again I'm rather partial to Pentax lenses.

Your praise for this lens was one of the reasons I got the (optically identical) FA*300 f4.5 - for which I am very grateful.

You can tell by the names - "Pentax M", "Pentax A" - that these are K-mount lenses.

His Tokina lenses are also K-mount.

You can't go wrong with an SMC Pentax 28mm. On a crop frame body such as your Fuji it is not that wide - about equivalent to a 40mm on full frame. That is just the way the cookie crumbles (and how the physics work). It works well as a walkabout lens. I used it on a Samsung NX100 while doing my daily commute many times. The colors are very nice but a touch warm on digital, but that was required by film back in the day.

Get one while they are cheap(ish). Even if you don't like it, you won't lose a lot of money selling it on.
