Why does this become available now, when money is tight, employment precarious, local real-estate/school taxes due, and spending on loved ones necessary.... (no, my loved one is not going to choose this for her way to spend on me )

SMC Pentax A* 400mm F2.8 EDIF lens + Hood + Case SHARP! - eBay (item 270319842398 end time Dec-28-08 20:15:05 PST)

I'd jump on that bidding, maybe even the BIN, if times were different... :ugh: Going to have to let this pass even thought it's my most desired LBA candidate.

What a bargain!

If it is in the condition stated (and I have no reason to doubt it) this lens is an incredible bargain. Copies have sold on eBay and elsewhere for $1000-$1500 more in the last two or three years - I've been following auction prices of long "A" glass, hoping to find the A*1200 at a price I could afford. Maybe this is a sign that the old Pentax primes have finally begun to drop in price from the stratospheric levels they reached during the lens frenzy following the introduction of the K10D.

I have a copy of the A*400/2.8 and it's a real monster! You'll need a very sturdy tripod (and preferably a gimbal mount) if you hope to hold it steady. IQ is superb, and it can be used with the Pentax AF 1.7x teleconverter to give the performance of a 680mm f5.6 - enough for almost any telelens enthusiast!

My guess is because the previous owner's money was tight, employment precarious, local real-estate/school taxes due, and spending on loved ones was necessary.

Andorama sure didn't pay anything close what they're offering it for. Someone needed it unloaded.

Absolutely correct. As money woes increase, so do the number of 'toys' available at bargain prices.

But prices on ebay.co.uk seem to be keeping up. I keep watching for S-M-C Takumars but the prices are similar, if not higher, than earlier this year.

There's been a few AF lenses recent (there's a DA21 and DA70 at the moment), but the prices have been just too high for me. For example, Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Lens went for £113. When you consider you can get this for 150-160 new, that price just seems crazy.

Wasn't me - I'm still waiting for my government bail-out.
