The strange case of the 35mm , nee 50mm

Maybe it's ingrained memory , but with a 35 ,ex 50 , I never find I am missing anything .
Even the 27 from another system is OK , but not entirely comfortable .
I love architectural details, plus being able to move around as required for creating the framing ,
The new corrected zooms are fine , but I lose touch with the subject somehow , or maybe where I am in relation to the subject .
OK , I have mild kind of ASD glitch , but it still seems odd .
Have to fix the Ks-1 / 35 !!
Regards
dee

I don’t mean to be difficult but I’m struggling to understand your post.

If I read this right you are saying that on an apsc camera you fin that using a 35mm lens (similar in perspective to using a 50mm on full frame) you find this comfortable and easy to use vs a “standard zoom”.

Two other points - what 27mm and on what size sensor? I have family with ASD so I get how uncomfortable changing a specific way of doing things can be.

Participation in the “Single In” group and shooting a lens for a month and posting images can change your relationship to that lens.

Are we singing the praises of the 50mm (or 50 equiv) lens here? Then I'll add my appreciation. 40mm is my most-used focal length, and probably my favorite, but 50mm is a close second. The 50mm is ever so slightly telephoto, meaning it has a little bit of pleasing compression, and it treats straight lines very well, with no distortion. It's an artist's lens. I just got done using the Pentax-M 1.7/50mm for a monthly challenge on the K1 II, and it was very pleasant.

Hi dee,

I also find that a 35mm lens on my K-3 III provides a very usable angle of view.

One of my lenses is a DA 20-40mm zoom, which is sort of a 'normal' lens with some wiggle room. Quite versatile.

Yeah, normal and slight wide (35-50 on FF) is very comfortable. To the point that I recently bought back 35 Ltd that I sold two months ago

I find it a shame that there are no prime 35 and 43mm equivalents on APS-C and only zooms are left to use.

Isn't the 21 Ltd pretty close to 35mm on apsc?

I use 31 and 43 a lot on k3iii. Actually, by myself I'll carry 15,31 and 43, and only take 16-85 (and very rarely 70-200) if there are people involved and I'm supposed to take photos.

It is 30,5mm Close, but not the same. Well, APS-C is special so I will live with difficulties coming with it :P

Rounding matters if we are splitting hairs. Apsc crop ratio on Pentax is more like 1.52 than 1.5 making it just over 31mm equivalence. But a more precise metric is available: Field of view.

DA 21
Field of View (Diag. / Horiz.)
APS-C: 68 ° / 59 °

FA 35
Field of View (Diag. / Horiz.)
Full frame: 63 ° / 54 °

FA 31
Field of View (Diag. / Horiz.)
Full frame: 70 ° / 60 °

So clearly the DA 21 on apsc is not as narrow as the FA 35 on FF. However, it has a tad narrower field of view on apsc than the FA 31 would on ff. It’s quite close to the same perspective but slightly narrower and this is in line with the 1.52x calculation of 31.92mm equivalence.

Yes, but I was searching for 35 equivalent. There is 24mm FA which is close to 35 FF on APS-C, but as all FA lenses it is pretty big.

Never mind, I use what I have and live with choices I made

That’s a reasonable approach. The 24mm on apsc is slightly narrower than 35mm at 62/54 degrees. But that’s still quite close. My annoyance with the da 21 is the slow aperture. I’d love a faster wide apsc prime but the reality is the DA 21 size is so appealing I might actually dislike a faster lens in practice.

Why fiddle with unsatisfactory primes when Pentax now offers awesomely sharp zooms like the HD DA 16-85 mm ED WR ?

My “Super Program” was kitted with a ‘A’ 50mm F/1.7 lens, so that was my primary lens for the 12 years I used that camera, but in recent years, when I could really choose my perspective with my DA 20-40mm Ltd, I’ve found myself choosing a wider perspective, closer to 28mm on my “APS-C” camera, so I guess I would have used 4N mm using 35mm film.
